The alpha-helical antifreeze protein (AFP) from winter flounder inhibits ice growth by binding to a specific set of pyramidal surface planes that are not otherwise macroscopically expressed. The 37-residue AFP contains three 11-amino acid repeats that make a stereo-specific fit to the ice lattice along the <01-12> direction of the (20-21) and equivalent binding planes. When the AFP was shortene...

We report the crystal structure and dielectric properties of a pure H2O@C60 crystal at low temperature. The caged water molecules free from the hydrogen bonds rotate even at 8 K. The antifreeze rotating water molecules respond to an external electric field due to their permanent dipole moment.

A novel computational technique for modeling crystal formation has been developed that combines three-dimensional (3-D) molecular representation and detailed energetics calculations of molecular mechanics techniques with the less-sophisticated probabilistic approach used by statistical techniques to study systems containing millions of molecules undergoing billions of interactions. Because our ...

The sugar moiety of the antifreeze glycoprotein AFGP can form a unique dynamic water phase that includes disordered molecules thereby inhibiting freezing process. property this seems to depend on both structure and number moieties. More information be found in Research Article by R. Okamoto, Y. Kajihara, co-workers (DOI: 10.1002/chem.202203553).

NMR on frozen solutions is an ideal method to study fundamental questions of macromolecular hydration, because the hydration shell of many biomolecules does not freeze together with bulk solvent. In the present study, we present previously undescribed NMR methods to study the interactions of proteins with their hydration shell and the ice lattice in frozen solution. We applied these methods to ...
