OBJECTIVE This study aimed at evaluating the in vitro efficacy and health implications of inconsistencies in different production batches of antimycotic drugs. MATERIALS AND METHODS in vitro susceptibility profiles of 36 Candida spp. - C. albicans (19.4%), C. glabrata (30.6%), C. tropicalis (33.3%), and C. pseudotropicalis (16.7%) - obtained from human endocervical and high vaginal swabs (ECS...

The mode of action for the reproductive toxicity of some triazole antifungals has been characterized as an increase in serum testosterone and hepatic response, and reduced insemination and fertility indices. In order to refine our mechanistic understanding of these potential modes of action, gene expression profiling was conducted on liver and testis from male Wistar Han IGS rats exposed to myc...

Aspergillus fumigatus isolates were tested with three antifungals by flow cytometry (FC) and fluorescence-activated cell sorting. FC results after 4 h correlated well with MICs obtained by the NCCLS M38-A method; voriconazole exhibited fungicidal activity, albeit to a lesser extent than amphotericin B, but to a greater extent than itraconazole.

A 39-year-old man with Candida glabrata endophthalmitis was successfully treated with a 28-day course of intravenous caspofungin. Presence of underlying renal insufficiency and infection with a drug-resistant strain precluded use of amphotericin B or fluconazole. Intravitreal administration of antifungals and vitrectomy were not required. The role of caspofungin in Candida endophthalmitis is di...

Currently, no agar-based susceptibility testing method has been standardized for testing dermatophytes. We describe a newly developed agar-based method employing disk diffusion assay to test the susceptibility of 47 isolates of dermatophytes against 8 antifungals. Our results show that the method is reproducible, is simple, and could be used to determine the antifungal susceptibility of dermato...

Use of amphotericin B-impregnated bone cement in combination with systemic antifungals for the treatment of coccidioidal osteomyelitis offers the potential for sustained local concentrations of drug at the site of the infection. Amphotericin B levels in bone of up to 5.1 μg/g have been demonstrated 4 months after placement of bone cement.
