INTRODUCTION Presoaking meshes for hernia repair with antiseptics prior to implantation could decrease the adhesion of microorganisms to the material surface and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistances. In this work, we evaluate chlorhexidine and allicin (natural antiseptic not yet tested for these purposes) against vancomycin as antiseptics to be used in the pretreatment of a heavyweight pol...

Alcohol compounds are increasingly used as a substitute for hand washing in health care environments and some public places because these compounds are easy to use and do not require water or hand drying materials. However, the effectiveness of these compounds depends on how much soil (bioburden) is present on the hands. Workers in health care environments and other public places must wash thei...

This work demonstrates that the chlorinated antiseptics have no power to penetrate blood clots and destroy bacteria therein contained. Correspondingly, blood clots may protect virulent bacteria for a long period of time and the organisms properly planted will be able to proliferate in a normal manner.

To assess whether rinsing with oral antiseptics before sputum collection would reduce contamination of mycobacterial cultures, 120 patients with suspected tuberculosis were randomly assigned to rinse with chlorhexidine or cetylpyridinium mouthwash before collection. The culture contamination rate was significantly lower after rinsing with chlorhexidine before collection, especially for cultures...

Background: Studies have demonstrated the role of sputum as a site severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 (SARSCoV-2) transmission. However, there is limited literature on virucidal efficacy oral antiseptics against SARS-CoV-2 virus. This study investigated three oral-antiseptics compared to placebo-control in infected individuals.
Methodology: A pilot adults with positive result...

Periodontal diseases are inflammatory of infectious origin. Their initial treatment is based on a mechanical debridement associated with chemical approach; through antiseptics and/or antibiotics. Currently, natural products essential oils increasingly used as new alternative therapy in the periodontal diseases, due to their innumerable medicinal properties.

Antimicrobials are classified by the pathogens targeted, e.g. as antibacterials or antifungals. This grouping may be subdivided as antibacterials also include urinary antiseptics and anti-mycobacterial drugs. Antimicrobials, especially antibacterials, are strictly classified into chemotherapeutic agents (synthetic chemicals), and antibiotics, produced from living organisms, usually fungi. Howev...

BACKGROUND Oral antiseptics reduce nosocomial infections and ventilator-associated pneumonia in critically ill medical and surgical patients intubated for prolonged periods. However, the role of oral antiseptics given before and after planned surgery is not clear. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to determine the effect of oral antiseptics (chlorhexidine or povidone-iodine...
