Achieving an appropriate assembly sequence needs deep verification for its physical feasibility. For this purpose, industrial engineers use several assembly predicates; namely, liaison, geometric feasibility, stability and mechanical feasibility. However, testing an assembly sequence for these predicates requires huge assembly information. Extracting such assembly information from an assembled ...

This review paper is focusing on utilizing ontological approaches in capturing and sharing assembly design knowledge towards better integration between the product design and manufacturing, more specifically between assembly design and assembly process planning (APP) domains. Most of the significant Approaches that have been proposed by researchers in the last decade are reported in this extend...

This paper provides an introduction to the Design, Planning and Assembly Repository available through the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The goal of the Repository is to provide a publicly accessible collection of 2D and 3D CAD and solid models from industry problems as well as related information for planning and assembly. In this way, research and development e orts ca...

Within the ramp-up phase of highly automated assembly systems, the planning effort forms a large part of production costs. Due to shortening product lifecycles, changing customer demands, and therefore an increasing number of ramp-up processes, these costs even rise. So assembly systems should reduce these efforts and simultaneously be flexible for quick adaption to changes in products and thei...

In this paper, the advantages and performance of genetic programming in use of error recovery planning in robotic assembly systems is discussed. Existing systems use polynomial time planning techniques or heuristics to produce error recovery plans. However, these systems require translation of the generated plans to working controller codes. An alternative approach could be the use of Genetic P...

In this paper, we propose a collaborative framework to realize a Virtual Enterprise (VE) for the domain of Micro Assembly. The framework is developed using 3APL technologies [5] and employs the idea of viewing WebService composition as a planning problem [10]. We describe the implementation of the framework and experiment with two micro assembly work cells.
