Modern high-speed atomic force microscopes generate significant quantities of data in a short amount of time. Each image in the sequence has to be processed quickly and accurately in order to obtain a true representation of the sample and its changes over time. This paper presents an automated, adaptive algorithm for the required processing of AFM images. The algorithm adaptively corrects for b...

The primary objective of this paper is to present a simplified model for an array of Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM) operating in static mode. Its derivation is based on the asymptotic theory of thin plates initiated by P. Ciarlet and P. Destuynder and on the two-scale convergence introduced by M. Lenczner which generalizes the theory of G. Nguetseng and G. Allaire. As an example, we investigate...

The aim of the study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles by using filamentous fungus Penicillium sp. The fungal culture was isolated from the soil samples collected from agriculture fields in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu, India. The purified fungal isolates were inoculated in minimal medium and incubated at room temperature for three days. For the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, 50 ml of ...

Current interest in boron incorporation into carbonates arises from the observation that the isotopic composition of carbonates depends on the pH of the fluid from which they precipitated. This finding opened the possibility of using boron isotopic composition of natural carbonates as a paleo-pH proxy. In this study, coprecipitation of boron by calcite was investigated using Atomic Force Micros...

We report on three different liquid crystalline compounds with a central septithiophene core and alkylated end groups of strongly increasing bulkiness. In principle, the thiophene cores prefer to pack parallel to optimize their π-π interactions, which becomes sterically impossible for the bulkier end groups. Using X-ray diffraction, we find that the way out of this packing dilemma is toward liq...

A recent article in this journal by Roll et al (2008 Nanotechnology 19 045703) presents experimental results of the temperature dependence of dissipation in dynamic force microscopy which they use to elucidate the mechanisms of such a dissipation signal in the PTCDA on KBr system. We argue here that dissipation results are often highly dependent upon the tip structure, and urge caution in the i...

The advent of molecular medicine and new demands on pathologists to deliver prognostic and therapy-shaping analyses has created a need for enhanced imaging tools. Spectral imaging coupled wilh microscopy is a relatively novel and largely unexplored technology that holds out promise of satisfying, at least in part, such a need. New optical methods for spectral discrimination are being combined w...

We investigate the Markov property of rough surfaces. Using stochastic analysis, we characterize the complexity of the surface roughness by means of a Fokker-Planck or Langevin equation. The obtained Langevin equation enables us to regenerate surfaces with similar statistical properties compared with the observed morphology by atomic force microscopy.

AFM has developed into a powerful tool in structural biology, providing topographs of proteins under close-to-native conditions and featuring an outstanding signal/noise ratio. However, the imaging mechanism exhibits particularities: fast and slow scan axis represent two independent image acquisition axes. Additionally, unknown tip geometry and tip-sample interaction render the contrast transfe...
