Augmentation mammoplasty is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries worldwide. According to Cahan et al. [1], no statistical significance was noted in the mean tumor size, stage, nodal status of breast cancer between augmented patient group and non-augmented patients. Since the rate of breast cancer is radically increasing, and breast augmentation surgery is performed actively o...

BACKGROUND Interspinous spacer/implants like the Device for Intervertebral Assisted Motion (DIAM™) are controversially yet commonly used in the surgical treatment of lumbar degenerative pathologies. Criticism is based on ill-defined indications, lack of superiority over decompression, and a poorly understood mechanical effect. Yet, continued use by surgeons implies their perceived clinical meri...

background: alveolar ridge preservation could be performed immediately following tooth extraction to limit dimensional changes of alveolar process due to bone resorption. the aim of this study was to compare the clinical and histologic outcomes of socket preservation using two different graft materials; deproteinized bovine bone mineral (dbbm) and demineralized freeze‑dried bone allograft (dfdb...

We present experimental data on the use of autostereoscopic displays as complementary visualisation aids to the surgical stereo microscope for augmented reality surgery. Five experts in the use of the microscope, and five nonexperts, performed a depth experiment to assess stereo cues as provided by two autostereoscopic displays (DTI 2015XLS Virtual Window and SHARP micro-optic twin), the surgic...

In this paper we present fundamental results of the first evaluation of INPRES in a laboratory environment. While the system itself--an HMD-based approach for intraoperative augmented reality in head and neck surgery--has been described elsewhere several times, this paper will focus on methods and outcome of recently accomplished test procedures.

The graphical overlay of additional medical information over the patient during a surgical procedure has long been considered one of the most promising applications of augmented reality. While many experimental systems for augmented reality in medicine have reached an advanced state and can deliver high-quality augmented video streams, they usually depend heavily on specialized dedicated hardwa...

Minimally invasive or totally endoscopic cardiac surgery is an operation technique in which physicians operate through small incision points at the cardiac region, in contrast to open chest surgery. A master-slave telemanipulator system, like the da Vinci, allows the insertion of very small instruments and imitates physicians’ hand and finger movements from their remote console. In order to per...

Computer vision techniques for tracking real objects, surgical tools, patient’s organs are been integrated in the medical scenarios. We present a marker-based approach followed by a rigid registration to align real and virtual objects. The case study is a maxillofacial surgery and the method provides virtual and augmented aid to the surgeon while s/he is performing the osteotomy task.
