Previous approaches for automated essay scoring (AES) learn a rating model by minimizing either the classification, regression, or pairwise classification loss, depending on the learning algorithm used. In this paper, we argue that the current AES systems can be further improved by taking into account the agreement between human and machine raters. To this end, we propose a rankbased approach t...

Since Ellis Page (1966) published his landmark article, “The Imminence of Grading Essays by Computer,” the issue of using computers to grade writing and provide feedback has been a great concern for researchers in language testing and writing instruction. Research has been done for the creation and development of systems for automated essay evaluation (AEE), or automated essay scoring (AES), wh...

There has been a recent surge of interest in computer-aided rapid data acquisition to increase the potential throughput and reduce the labour costs of large scale Caenorhabditis elegans studies. We present Automated WormScan, a low-cost, high-throughput automated system using commercial photo scanners, which is extremely easy to implement and use, capable of scoring tens of thousands of organis...

Traditional automated essay scoring systems rely on carefully designed features to evaluate and score essays. The performance of such systems is tightly bound to the quality of the underlying features. However, it is laborious to manually design the most informative features for such a system. In this thesis, we develop a novel approach based on recurrent neural networks to learn the relation b...

Automated scoring of writing operates under the assumption that the quality of a student essay can be characterized by a model of weighted features that are extracted from the essay. Because the automated scoring model is trained predicated on a representative sample of essays for a prompt, associated with each feature is an expected range of acceptable values based on the distribution in the t...

We describe a trainable computer vision system enabling the automated analysis of complex mouse behaviors. We also collect and manually annotate a very large video database used for training and testing the system. Our system performs on par with human scoring, as measured from the ground-truth manual annotations. Our video-based software should complement existing sensor based automated approa...

This paper presents a study in the domain of semi-automated and fully-automated ontology mapping. A process for inferring additional cross-ontology links within the domain of anatomical ontologies is presented and evaluated on pairs from three model organisms. The results of experiments performed with various external knowledge sources and scoring schemes are discussed.

This report summarizes the proceedings of the American Thoracic Society Workshop on the Noninvasive Identification of Inspiratory Flow Limitation in Sleep Studies held on May 16, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. The goal of the workshop was to discuss methods for standardizing the scoring of flow limitation from nasal cannula pressure tracings. The workshop began with presentations on the physiology ...

AIMS To compare the results of breast cancer sections with HercepTesttrade mark immunohistochemistry (IHC) scores ranging from 0 to 3+ with fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) for HER2 amplification. The HER2 digital scoring application of the Micrometastasis Detection System (MDS) was used, together with manual scoring of FISH and HercepTest, to determine whether this system provides an ...

Sleep spindle properties index cognitive faculties such as memory consolidation and diseases such as major depression. For this reason, scoring sleep spindle properties in polysomnographic recordings has become an important activity in both research and clinical settings. The tediousness of this manual task has motivated efforts for its automation. Although some progress has been made, increasi...
