The structures of the two fengycins, lipopeptides from Bacillus subtilis, were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and chemical degradation. They show a close structural relationship to the plipastatins from Bacillus cereus differing only in the stereochemistry of the Tyr residues.
Bacillus subtilis (Ehrenburg) Cohn ATCC 49760, deposited as Bacillus globigii, is the source strain for the restriction enzymes BglI and BglII. Its complete sequence and full methylome were determined using single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing.
Spores of Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus subtilis were found to exhibit intrinsic paramagnetic properties as a result of the accumulation of manganese ions. All three Bacillus species displayed strong yet distinctive magnetic properties arising from differences in manganese quantity and valency. Manganese ions were found to accumulate both within the spore core as well as be...
Title of Thesis: DEVELOPING TOOLS FOR INVESTIGATING CHEMOTAXIS SIGNAL CLUSTERS IN BACILLUS SUBTILIS James A. Rogers, Jr., Master of Science, 2012 Thesis directed by: Associate Professor Richard C. Stewart Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics Many bacteria make use of a set of dedicated chemoreceptor proteins to control a His-Asp signaling system; this control converts environmental...
Suppressor-sensitive mutants of Bacillus subtilis phage SPO2 were isolated and classified into 18 cistrons. A linear genetic map was constructed. The genes controlling early functions of phage development were clustered near the CI gene which may produce phage repressor.
Bacillus subtilis C3, a commercial textile dye-decolorizing and -degrading bacterium, was isolated from the common effluent treatment plant (CEPT) of the Jetpur textile dyeing and printing industrial sector situated in the district of Rajkot, Gujarat, India. Here, we present the annotated 4.18-Mb draft genome sequence of B. subtilis C3, providing information about the metabolic pathways involve...
In a previous paper (Powell & Strange, 1953) the isolation of non-dialysable peptides containing hexosamine from exudates produced by germinating spores ofBacillus 8ubtilis and B. megatherium was described. More precise chemical definition can now be given to these peptides. In the following report, a comparison is made between their constitution and that ofthe peptides present in extracts from...
