Waves in chemically excitable systems can refract when impinging on an interface between regions of different reaction kinetics and/or diffusion constants. Here we study this process using the thin reaction-zone limit wherein the dynamics of the system can be reduced to the tracking of the boundaries between quiescent and excited regions. We show how to derive an integrodifferential equation fo...

New methods of identifying the transition rule of a Belousov–Zhabotinskii (BZ) reaction directly from experimental data using cellular automata (CA) models are investigated. The experimental set-up and new techniques for image pre-processing to ensure the identification of representative models are discussed including noise reduction, pixel and color calibration. Two kinds of models, the Greenb...

An experimental technique for preparation and image reconstruction of excitation waves in cylindrical Belousov-Zhabotinsky media is developed. It is found that pairs of spiral rotors generate ring-shaped waves by wave collisions which occur approximately 180± behind the pacemakers. Numerical simulations reveal radius-dependent competition between common vortices and rotating planar waves. This ...

An algorithm inspired by Genome sequencing is proposed which "reconstructs" a single long trajectory of a dynamical system from many short trajectories. This procedure is useful in situations when many data sets are available but each is insufficiently long to apply a meaningful analysis directly. The algorithm is applied to the Rössler and Lorenz dynamical systems as well as to experimental da...

We investigate growth of the excitable Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in chaotic, time-varying flows. In slow flows, reacted regions tend to lie near vortex edges, whereas fast flows restrict reacted regions to vortex cores. We show that reacted regions travel toward vortex centers faster as flow speed increases, but nonreactive scalars do not. For either slow or fast flows, reaction is promoted...

In the limit of a large duffusivity ratio, spotlike solutions in the two-dimensional Belousov-Zhabotinski reaction in water-in-oil microemulsion are studied. It is shown analytically that such spots undergo an instability as the diffusivity ratio is decreased. An instability threshold is derived. For spots of small radius, it is shown that this instability leads to a spot splitting into precise...

In this essay I examine the ways in which the Belousov– Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction is being used by biologists to model a variety of biological systems and processes. The BZ reaction is characterized as a functional model of biological phenomena. It is able to play this role because, though based on very different substrates, the model and system modeled are examples of the same type of excitabl...

We report results on chemical wave propagation obtained from experiments with a modified Belousov–Zhabotinsky reaction. Under pseudo-onedimensional reaction conditions, excitation pulses either form closely stacked, stable wavepackets or merge with a slow leading pulse in front-to-back collisions. Moreover, wave stacking can involve the cascading formation of metastable clusters. These phenomen...
