The authors measured cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV), and mean transit time (MTT) in pigs by gadodiamide bolus injections and the bolus tracking technique. Two different pulse sequences were applied and compared: gradient-echo (GE) and spin-echo (SE) echoplanar imaging (EPI). After normalization of CBF and CBV values to the area under the arterial input function (AIF), a ...

THE pulmonary blood volume may be defined as the volume of blood interposed between the pulmonary artery, at the pulmonary valve, and the left atrium. The volume has been measured either on a relative or on an absolute basis, that is, by measurement of changes in pulmonary blood volume or by determination of the actual volume. The former method includes determination of lung volumes, or of pulm...

Intracardiac frusemide given to seven patients recovering from high-altitude pulmonary oedema caused a significant reduction in the pulmonary blood volume before the onset of diuresis. This supports the suggestion that the mobilization of fluid from the pulmonary circuit is responsible for the relief of symptoms in some patients with pulmonary oedema even when a diuresis does not occur.

OUR STUDIES on the seeming loss of plasma from the circulation after transfusion and the mobilization of plasma often seen after hemorrhage or drug infusions have been handicapped by a large variation in measured responses between animals. Conversations with other workers on blood volume regulation have indicated that such variability is not uncommon. The necessity of using large groups of anim...

One of the primary measurements the physician would like to acquire from a patient is that of the concentration of O2 and other nutrients in the cells. Such quantities are normally so difficult to measure that the doctor is forced to accept the second-class measurements of blood flow and changes in blood volume, which usually correlate with concentration of nutrients. If blood flow is difficult...

The clinical evidences of dehydration which are present during severe acidosis in diabetes mellitus raises the question as to whether alterations may occur in the volume of the circulating blood. Such alterations, if present, would influence the apparent concentration of various blood constituents in acidosis and would be of pathological significance in several particulars. It seems likely that...
