We give a simple proof that the straightforward generalisation of clique-width to arbitrary structures can be unbounded on structures of bounded tree-width. This can be corrected by allowing fusion of elements.
We show that for every forest T the linear rank-width of T is equal to the path-width of T , and the linear clique-width of T equals the path-width of T plus two, provided that T contains a path of length three. It follows that both linear rank-width and linear clique-width of forests can be computed in linear time. Using our characterization of linear rank-width of forests, we determine the se...
The width of a subset C of the vertices of a distance-regular graph is the maximum distance which occurs between elements of C. Dually, the dual width of a subset in a cometric association scheme is the index of the “last” eigenspace in the Q-polynomial ordering to which the characteristic vector of C is not orthogonal. Elementary bounds are derived on these two new parameters. We show that any...
Bone metastases are severely debilitating and have a significant impact on the quality of life of women with metastatic breast cancer. Treatment options are limited and in order to develop more targeted therapies, improved understanding of the complex mechanisms that lead to bone lesion development are warranted. Interestingly, whilst prostate-derived bone metastases are characterised by mixed ...
Introduction. Submammary adipofascial flap (SMAF) is a valuable option for replacement of the inferior portion of the breast. It is particularly useful for reconstruction of partial mastectomy defects. It is also used to cover breast implants. Most surgeons base this flap cranially on the submammary skin crease, reflecting it back onto the breast. The blood vessels supplying this flap are not w...
OBJECTIVE One problem existing in breast-conservation surgery is ipsilateral breast tumour recurrence, and one of its major risk factors is surgical margin positivity. We therefore investigated whether total-circumference surgical margin examination can reduce surgical margin-positive rates. METHODS A total of 122 cases were examined after BCS was performed between March 2004 and March 2006. ...
Purpose The optimal indications for omitting adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) after breast-conserving surgery are still controversial in ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast. The purpose of this study was to validate the role of postoperative RT in DCIS patients aged ≤50 years and with tumor margin widths of <1 cm, both of which have been proven to be high-risk features for recurrence i...
Cancer-associated inflammation is a key determinant of disease progression and survival in most cancers. The aim of our study was to assess the predictive value of preoperative inflammatory markers, such as the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio, red cell distribution width (RDW), and mean platelet volume, for survival in breast cancer patients. In total, 608 breast ca...
1. A study was conducted to evaluate the carcass composition of 1083 live birds using ultrasonic and morphological measurements and to estimate the genetic relationship between predicted and dissected carcass composition in Japanese quail. 2. Birds were reared for 35 d, and morphological measurements consisting of the length and width of breast muscle were recorded for all birds using a digital...
