Marine ectotherms, including oysters are exposed to variable environmental conditions in coastal shallow waters and estuaries. In the light of global climate change, additional stressors like pollution might pose higher risk to populations. On the basis of the concept of oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance in aquatic ectotherms (40), we show that a persistent pollutant, cadmium, can ...

Bioaccumulation of potentially toxic metals by litter-feeding invertebrates is determined not only by the concentration of metal in the diet, but also by the flux of food through the body. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the main elements regulating food consumption and so are expected to affect the bioaccumulation of trace elements such as cadmium. To test this idea, we applied a three-factor orth...

Aim: The protective effect of vitamin E (vit E) on cadmium (Cd) induced oxidative stress was studied in the blood of rats. Methods: The rats were randomly divided in to three experimental groups: Control, Cd treated and Cd + vit E treated, each containing 10 animals. The Cd treated and Cd + vit E treated groups were injected subcutaneously daily with CdCl2 dissolved in isotonic NaCl in the amou...

This study was carried out to determine the effects of cadmium (Cd) (0 and 2 mg kg-1 soil) and salt stress (NaCl 0 and 3000 mg kg-1 soil) on shoot dry weights and shoot Cd, sodium (Na) and potassium (K) concentrations of salt-tolerant (Maverik) and salt-sensitive (RX-9292) hybrid maize varieties. Plants were grown under controlled greenhouse conditions for 19 days. Shoot dry matter productions ...

Plant growth is severely affected by toxic concentrations of the non-essential heavy metal cadmium (Cd). Comprehensive transcriptome analysis by RNA-Seq following cadmium exposure is required to further understand plant responses to Cd and facilitate future systems-based analyses of the underlying regulatory networks. In this study, rice plants were hydroponically treated with 50 µM Cd for 24 h...

The aim of this study is to determine the level of cadmium contamination in various organs of Snakehead-fish (Ophicephalus striatus). The detected levels of Cd were tested for genotoxic potential in snakehead-fish (SSN-1 cells) cell line by micronucleus assay. To evaluate the SSN-1 cells as a model for genotoxicity study, various concentrations of cadmium were applied to the cells, and the cadm...

The time course ofcadmim uptake by the roots of intact tomato plats (Lycoperskba escuaetum MDL) was measured In a nutrient solutin with a micromolar cadmium concentration untfl all cadmium In the medim was exhausted. Exhaustion taking a few hours, cadmium was repeatedl added to the nutrient solution. Tle initial rate of cadmium uptake was computed for each cadmium addition. This rate sharply in...

Zinc (an essential trace element) and cadmium (a ubiquitous environmental pollutant with acclaimed toxicity) have been found to occur together in nature, with reported antagonism between the two elements. The present study aimed at determination of plasma levels of zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) and their interrelationship in adult Nigerians. The series comprised adults (n=443) aged ≥18 yrs (mean ±...

The first luminescent Bi-Cd-organic framework, Bi2Cd(2,6-pdc)4(H2O)2·H2O (2,6-H2pdc = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylate), has been synthesized by using bismuth (Bi) oxides and cadmium (Cd) salts as metal sources under hydrothermal conditions. Tunable and white light luminescence was obtained through the doping of different Ln(3+) ions into the Bi-Cd-organic framework.

The influence of several chelating agents (CaDTPA, ZnDTPA, CaEDTA, ZnEDTA, DMSA, D-penicillamine and DMPS, DMP and DDC) on the acute toxicity of CdCl2 and on the whole body retention and tissue distribution of cadmium after the IV application of 115mCdCl2 was compared in mice. The chelating agents were applied immediately after the application of cadmium. CaDTPA, ZnDTPA and DMSA appeared to be ...
