In group conversations, not speaking is the state of affairs experienced by most people most of the time; I refer to this as ‘‘conversational latency.’’ Hypothesizing that conversational latency affects one’s discursive options, I analyze the association between latency (operationalized as the number of turns that elapsed since the current speaker last spoke) and turn-initial words (e.g., but, ...

Contrary to expectation, we demonstrate that spider dragline silk spun experimentally under water displays greater stiffness and higher resilience compared to silk spun "naturally" into air. We suggest that this consequence of extended wet-spinning is due to increased molecular orientation resulting from extension of the mobile phase.

Analogous to genetically distinct alleles, epialleles represent heritable states of different gene expression from sequence-identical genes. Alleles and epialleles both contribute to phenotypic heterogeneity. While alleles originate from mutation and recombination, the source of epialleles is less well understood. We analyze active and inactive epialleles that were found at a transgenic insert ...

Two prospective studies examined a theoretical model wherein exposure to victimization, resulting from early behavioral risk, heightens children's social alienation and subsequent deviant peer affiliation (DPA). Across Study 1 (298 girls, 287 boys; K-7th grade; 5-12 years) and Study 2 (338 girls, 298 boys; 2nd-6th grade; 8-12 years), children, parents, peers, and teachers reported on children's...

In modern digital protection and control systems, an alienation technique has recently become the workhorse of quantitative research and analysis. In this paper, an alienation technique is developed for calculations of original power factor on-line, active and compensation reactive powers and determination of the required number of capacitor banks to get the desired power factor. Alienation coe...

Schwarz domain decomposition methods can be analyzed both at the continuous and discrete level. For consistent discretizations, one would naturally expect that the discretized method performs as predicted by the continuous analysis. We show in this short note for two model problems that this is not always the case, and that the discretization can both increase and decrease the convergence speed...

The approach to neuroprotection in stroke has relied mainly on exogenously administered drugs derived from research probing the cellular mechanisms of ischemic brain injury. This approach has had limited translational impact. Over 1000 putative neuroprotective agents have been developed, and over 100 agents have advanced to clinical trials. None, however, have shown clinical efficacy.1 By contr...
