The ocular ischemic syndrome is characterised by ocular symptoms and signs secondary to severe carotid artery obstruction. In this paper, two cases of bilateral ocular involvement are presented. The first case was caused by severe bilateral carotid stenosis and the second by bilateral occlusion of the carotid artery.

Persistence of the hypoglossal artery is an unusual congenital abnormality of the carotid arterial system, and the simultaneous occurrence of atheromatous disease in the internal carotid artery and persistent hypoglossal artery is even more uncommon. Carotid surgery in this situation is challenging, and the surgeon must be aware of potential inherent pitfalls. A 74-year-old woman with asymptoma...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Aneurysms of the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery generally exhibit a benign clinical course, with mass effect on cranial nerves. Rupture generally leads to carotid cavernous fistula and, rarely, to subarachnoid hemorrhage. In this study we report results of treatment in 85 patients with 86 cavernous sinus aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a 15-year pe...

Forty consecutive patients undergoing thromboendarterectomy for total internal carotid artery occlusion were studied in an attempt to determine a) whether careful case selection could be expected to reduce future postoperative mortality and morbidity, b) whether the achieved patency rate justified early operation and c) whether patients in whom patency was restored and maintained had a better l...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Symptomatic carotid artery disease is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The pathophysiologic mechanisms of cerebral ischemia among patients with carotid occlusion remain underexplored. METHODS We conducted a prospective observational cohort study of patients hospitalized within 7 days of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack because of ≥50% car...

This report describes our experiences with a patient who developed delayed recurrent retinal and hemispheric ischemia distal to an old internal carotid artery occlusion in the neck. Fundoscopy and sequential cerebral arteriography documented that recurrent ischemic symptoms in this individual were the result of embolic fragments arising from the "stump" of the occluded internal carotid artery a...

Doppler ultrasonic assessment of extracranial carotid occlusive disease has been modified to decrease the incidence of false positive and negative diagnoses. The technique, which assessed directional flow in the frontal artery and the influence of sequential compression of each temporal, infraorbital, facial and common carotid artery, was performed on 152 vessels visualized by contrast arteriog...

The no-reflow phenomenon has been produced in the cerebral hemispheres of the gerbil by 30 minutes of bilateral carotid artery occlusion. The no-reflow phenomenon was found to develop in relation to the fall in blood pressure which occurred on release of bilateral carotid clips. Metaraminol tartrate intravenously prevented the fall of blood pressure and significantly reduced the occurrence of t...
