Using platelet-rich plasma, we investigated the effect of 1.1-MHz continuous wave high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) on platelet activation, aggregation and adhesion to a collagen-coated surface. Platelets were exposed for durations of 10–500 s at spatial average intensities of up to 4860 W/cm. To avoid heating effects, the average temperature in the HIFU tank was maintained at 33.8 4.0°C...

INTRODUCTION High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) produces collapsing cavitation bubbles. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of collapsing cavitation bubbles to deliver antibacterial nanoparticles into dentinal tubules to improve root canal disinfection. METHODS In stage 1, experiments were performed to characterize the efficacy of collapsing cavitation bubbles to deliver the min...

Drought-induced forest dieback has been widely reported over the last decades, and the evidence for a direct causal link between survival and hydraulic failure (xylem cavitation) is now well known. Because vulnerability to cavitation is intimately linked to the anatomy of the xylem, the main objective of this study was to better understand the xylem anatomical properties associated with cavitat...

Pump cavitation is the formation and subsequent collapse or implosion of vapor bubbles in a pump. It occurs when the absolute pressure on the liquid falls below the liquid’s vapor pressure. This paper describes the validation of cavitation inception on a radial flow pump which develops 21m of head at 26lps of discharge at its best efficiency point (BEP) of discharge while operating at a speed o...

Cavitation bubbles induce impulsive forces on surrounding substrates, particles, or surfaces. Even though cavitation is a traditional topic in fluid mechanics, current understanding and studies do not capture the effect of cavitation on suspended objects in fluids. In the present work, the dynamics of a spherical particle due to a cavitation bubble is experimentally characterized and compared w...

Low specific speed centrifugal pumps have low flow rates and high heads. They are widely applied in the petroleum, chemical, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, metallurgy, and light industries, among others. With the development of space technology and petrol chemical industry, the highly stable cavitation performance of centrifugal pumps has been put forward. Poor cavitation performance is one of the...

Resistance to cavitation is a major determinant of plant survival under severe drought and can be used to quantify species adaptive potential. Interspecific variation in this key trait is well defined in woody species, but intraspecific variation (level and structure) resulting from standing genetic variation and phenotypic plasticity has never been determined. Combining for the first time in s...

Tree survival and fitness under changing environmental conditions with increasing drought stress is currently of high interest. When trees experience water shortage, the whole water transport system experiences strong tensions, which involves a risk of air-embolism formation in sap-conducting conduits. The phenomenon, in which air bubbles are formed in water under tension, is called ‘cavitation...

We investigate the limiting mechanical tension (negative pressure) that liquid water can sustain before cavitation occurs. The temperature dependence of this quantity is of special interest for water, where it can be used as a probe of a postulated anomaly of its equation of state. After a brief review of previous experiments on cavitation, we describe our method which consists in focusing a hi...
