Malposition of central venous catheter is a complication of central venous catheterization. A case of left internal jugular catheterization via left external jugular vein is reported. Details of the procedure are described and the literature is reviewed for similar malpositions.
We report the findings in a patient who developed Horner's syndrome as the first manifestation of mediastinal migration of a central venous catheter that resulted in hydromediastinum and hydrothorax. The pathogenesis of this complication of central venous catheterization is discussed.
Placement of long term central venous access devices (CVAD) such as chemo ports and Hickman's catheters are associated with a definite risk of catheter tip malpositioning. As such, malpositioning runs a risk of venous thrombosis and related complications; it is imperative to reposition the catheter. Percutaneous transfemoral venous approach has been described as a minimally invasive and safe me...
BACKGROUND The use of cardiac output monitoring may improve patient outcomes after major surgery. However, little is known about the use of this technology across nations. METHODS This is a secondary analysis of a previously published observational study. Patients aged 16 years and over undergoing major non-cardiac surgery in a 7-day period in April 2011 were included into this analysis. The ...
Misplacement of the tip central venous catheter after cardiac surgery - IJCA- Print ISSN No: 2394-4781 Online No:- 2394-4994 Article DOI 10.18231/j.ijca.2023.042, Indian Journal Clinical Anaesthesia-Indian J Clin Anaesth
Septic internal jugular vein-sigmoid sinus thrombosis (IJV-SST) associated with a malpositioned central venous catheter is a rare condition. It is potentially life-threatening and necessitates early diagnosis and rapid administration of appropriate medications. Unfortunately, it is difficult to diagnose due to vague clinical presentations. Several studies such as CT, MRI, and cerebral angiograp...
Central venous catheters are the most frequent causes of benign central vein stenosis. We report the case of a 79-year-old woman on hemodialysis through a twin catheter in the right internal jugular vein, presenting with superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome with patent SVC. The clinically driven endovascular therapy was conducted to treat the venous syndrome with a unilateral left brachiocephalic ...
Whenever possible it is suggested that a native arteriovenous fistula is created and used for haemodialysis, as it is superior to an arteriovenous graft and to a central venous catheter. (Level III evidence) When a native arteriovenous fistula is not possible, an artificial arteriovenous graft should be used in preference to a central venous catheter. Arteriovenous grafts have similar patency t...
A 55-year-old female presented with gross haematuria and low back pain. Her previous medical history included type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension for more than 10 years. Two months earlier, she had undergone left lobectomy of the liver for intrahepatic duct stones. The post-operative course was complicated by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemia associated with c...
Children with indwelling central venous catheters are at risk of embolisation of catheter fragments. Often their underlying condition means that they are poor candidates for surgical removal. We describe six children who underwent uncomplicated percutaneous transcatheter retrieval (and one who underwent percutaneous line tip repositioning), and suggest that this approach should be the treatment...
