BACKGROUND The apposing mucosa of the oral cavity makes the computed tomographic identification of a clinically obvious mass difficult. Contrast distension techniques have been used in radiology to evaluate for presence of a "hidden" mass. OBJECTIVE To illustrate the utility of distending the oral cavity with air, water, or contrast to display otherwise obscure oral cavity lesions. PATIENTS...

Childhood familial pheochromocytoma was investigated in four patients by abdominal computed tomographic scan, [131I]metaiodobenzylguanidine scan, and vena caval catecholamine sampling. Results conflicted with surgical findings. Computed tomographic scan identified all four adrenal tumors but missed two midline tumors in one patient. [131I]metaiodobenzylguanidine scan identified two of three adr...

Clinical and biochemical evidence of a catecholamine-secreting tumour was documented in a 19-year-old female presenting with malignant hypertension. The tumour was successfully localized to the pelvis by means of plasma noradrenaline assay from multiple sites, after previous attempts at localization had failed. Subsequently, computed tomographic (CT) scan allowed correct pre-operative localizat...

A 56-year-old man with metastatic prostatic carcinoma underwent placement of a Hickman catheter. Approximately two months after the procedure, he was admitted to the hospital with hemoptysis and in respiratory distress. A contrast computed tomographic (CT) scan confirmed the diagnosis of a cava-bronchial fistula. The fistula was surgically repaired, and the patient made a satisfactory recovery.

Schematic displays are presented of the cerebral territories supplied by branches of the middle cerebral artery as they would appear on axial and coronal computed tomographic (CT) scan sections. Companion diagrams of regional cortical function and a discussion of the fiber tracts are provided to simplify correlation of clinical deficits with coronal and axial CT abnormalities.

A 29-year-old female was admitted because of thrombocytopenia and an abdominal mass which was palpated 5 finger breadths below the left costal margin. A computed tomographic scan of the abdomen revealed splenomegaly with a large calcified cystic lesion. The spleen was removed and the pathological examination disclosed that the cyst was monolocular and the wall was of mesothelial origin.

A 55 year old woman with a conjunctival non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was found to have pulmonary nodules on a thoracic computed tomographic scan which were initially thought to be lymphomatous deposits. A subsequent biopsy specimen demonstrated granulomas consistent with sarcoidosis. The relationship between sarcoidosis and malignancy, in particular lymphoma, is discussed.

Intracranial neuroenteric cysts are rarely encountered and no more than 13 cases have been reported in the literature. This paper reports another case located in the cerebellum. These occur mostly in adults and there is no typical clinical presentation. The computed tomographic scan shows them as low attenuating lesions with no peripheral contrast enhancement. These cysts are believed to be dev...
