The growth kinetics of avian infectious bronchitis (AIB) virus in vitro have been investigated previously using different systems, including embryonated chicken eggs (Hitchner and White, 1955), and cell cultures of chick embryo kidney (Lukert, 1965 ; Bulow, 1966; Akers and Cunningham, 1968) or chick embryo liver (Lukert, 1965). Organ cultures of ciliated epithelium have been employed in various...

To investigate the age-dependent mechanism of susceptibility for chicken anemia virus (CAV) infection, we inoculated embryos and chickens of ages between day 9 of embryonic development and day 28 after hatching with CAV. Chicken embryos inoculated at days 9 and 11 of development showed no CAV-infected cells in the thymus, nor in other lymphoid organs. Many CAV-infected cells were detected in th...

Plant harvest is one of the most important management practices in constructed wetlands. In this study, we evaluated the impact of harvesting Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel on the activity and community structure of nitrifiers and denitrifiers in a free-water surface constructed wetland. The nitrifiers were targeted using bacterial and archaeal-amoA that encode ammonia monooxygena...

Introduction. Chicken anaemia virus, CAV, was until recently the only member of the Gyrovirus genus. 6 novel gyroviruses, AGV2, HGyV1, and GyV3-6, have since been discovered in human and chicken samples. Methods. PCR amplification of the VP2 gene was used to detect AGV2/HGyV1, GyV3, and CAV in a range of clinical samples including stool, respiratory, CSF, and HIV-positive plasma. Screening of f...

The article presents a review on vision-based solutions for driver assistance. These solutions support the driver to keep safe travel conditions. They use diverse sensing modalities for the recognition of the environment around the vehicle. Upon detection a critical safety situation they supply the driver with the warning. Four assistance systems have been addressed: TSR Traffic Sign Recognitio...

Large-conductance Ca2+-dependent K+ (BKCa) channels are important regulators of electrical activity. These channels colocalize and form ion channel complexes with voltage-dependent Ca2+ (CaV) channels. Recent stochastic simulations of the BKCa-CaV complex with 1:1 stoichiometry have given important insight into the local control of BKCa channels by fluctuating nanodomains of Ca2+. However, such...

Chicken anaemia agent (CAA) was purified using differential centrifugation and successive cycles of equilibrium density gradient centrifugation using sucrose and CsCl. The purification method was dependent on the use of an antigen-detecting ELISA based on a CAA-specific monoclonal antibody. Virus particles banded at a density of 1.33 to 1.34 g/ml in CsCl and measured 23.5 +/- 0.8 nm in diameter...

Gene transfer for β-thalassemia requires gene transfer into hematopoietic stem cells using integrating vectors that direct regulated expression of β globin at therapeutic levels. Among integrating vectors, oncoretroviral vectors carrying the human βglobin gene and portions of the locus control region (LCR) have suffered from problems of vector instability, low titers and variable expression. In...

Two systems, inoculation of bovine endothelial cells and of embryonated chicken eggs, were compared for detection of bluetongue virus (BTV) in blood specimens from experimentally inoculated sheep. For all BTV serotypes tested, embryonated chicken eggs detected longer periods of viremia than did bovine endothelial cells, primarily by detecting BTV in samples containing lower virus concentrations.

Background and Aims: Influenza virus nucleoprotein (NP) has the capacity to be used as subunit vaccine, but little is known about the impact of different cultures on its structure. In the present study we aimed to evaluate and compare the Isoelectric focusing (IEF) property of extracted viral nucleoproteins derived from Madin Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cell line and embryonated chicken eggs (EC...
