Acute infection of the lower respiratory tract comprises bronchitis, bronchiolitis, and pneumonia. From a clinical point of view it may be diYcult to distinguish these disease entities and one infection may progress into another. We cannot exclude the fact that a possible geographically heterogeneous worldwide Chlamydia pneumoniae pandemic could contribute to changes in asthma prevalences in different countries. However, it seems unlikely to us that this would be the sole explanation, as not all asthmatics (established or newly diagnosed) have C. pneumoniae present in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. We present a case of neonatal chlamydial pneumonitis to illustrate that a high index of suspicion is necessary to make the diagnosis so that treatment can be promptly instituted. The child was afebrile and the only symptom was a cough. The respiratory equations are calculated to understand the respiratory physiology. There was no overt abnormality with ventilation, oxygenation, compliance, resi...

This fact brings up the link between etiology of CAP and its clinical evolution and outcome. Furthermore, the majority of pneumonia etiologic studies are based on hospitalized patients, whereas there have been no recent population-based studies encompassin...
