The near-unlimited availability of CO2 has stimulated a growing research effort in creating value-added products from this greenhouse gas. This paper presents the trends on the most important methods used in the electrochemical synthesis of carboxylic acids from carbon dioxide. An overview is given of different substrate groups which form carboxylic acids upon CO2 fixation, including mechanisti...
As all plastids that have been investigated so far can be traced back to endosymbiotic uptake of cyanobacteria by heterotrophic host cells, they accordingly show a high similarity regarding photosynthesis, which includes both the photosystems and the biochemical reactions around the CO2 fixation via the Calvin-Bassham cycle. Major differences between the different algal and plant groups may inc...
The feasibility of using photosynthetic microalgae (cyanobacteria) as a subsystem component for the CELSS program, with particular emphasis on the manipulation of the biomass (protein/carbohydrate) has been addressed. Using factors which retard growth rates, but not photosynthetic electron flux, the partitioning of photosynthetically derived reductant may be dictated towards CO2 fixation (carb...
The properties of atmospheric CO2 fixation, metamagnetism, reversible guest adsorption and zero thermal expansion have been combined in a single robust MOF, [Cu3(bpac)3(CO3)2](ClO4)2·H2O (·H2O). This compound is a ditopically-bridged copper carbonate kagome lattice where desolvation of the MOF allows subtle tuning of the metamagnetic and uniaxial ZTE behaviour.
The draft genome sequence of Chlorobium limicola strain Frasassi was assembled from metagenomic sequencing of a green mat in an artificially lighted aquarium inside the Frasassi caves in Italy. The genome is 2.08 Mbp in size and contains the necessary genes for anoxygenic photosynthesis and CO2 fixation.
Agaves exhibit the water-conserving crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) photosynthetic pathway. Some species are potential biofuel feedstocks because they are highly productive in seasonally dry landscapes. In plants with CAM, high growth rates are often believed to be associated with a significant contribution of C3 photosynthesis to total carbon gain when conditions are favourable. There has e...
The potential of microalgae as renewable energy feedstock for biofuel production is well recognized in developing countries and it is a large source of biomass for capturing CO2 on non-arable lands. In the current studies photobioreactor with 2 L capacity was used and operated with generator exhaust gases for algal CO2 sequestration. The reactor operated on generator exhaust gases with CO2 rang...
Global climate changes involve elevated temperature and CO2 concentration, imposing significant impact on plant growth of various plant species. Elevated temperature exacerbates heat damages, but elevated CO2 has positive effects on promoting plant growth and heat tolerance. The objective of this study was to identify metabolic pathways affected by elevated CO2 conferring the improvement of hea...
The reaction of Cu(ClO4)(2).6H2O and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe) in basic aqueous solution yields a 3D compound, {[Cu3(CO3)2(bpe)3].2ClO4}n (1) through the atmospheric fixation of CO2 composing Cu(CO3) kagomé layers pillared by the bpe linker that exhibit weak antiferromagnetic interaction in the kagomé layer and interlayer ferromagnetic coupling at low temperature.
Hollow-structured Si/SiC@C nanospheres were prepared through a magnesiothermic reduction of resin-coated SiO2 spheres. These nanostructured materials with high surface area not only show high adsorption capacities of industrial dyes from wastewater, but also exhibit excellent catalytic activities for chemical fixation of CO2 under mild, solvent-free conditions.
