Composites were fabricated by infiltration of molten Al–13Si–9Mg into porous SiC derived from wood. The composite microstructure retains the heterogeneous orthorhombic symmetry of the initial wood material. As compared to the uninfiltrated SiC preform, the composite shows much improved transverse compressive strength and stiffness, resulting in reduced anisotropy. 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Publ...

Odontoid process fracture accounts for 5% to 15% of all cervical spine injuries, and the rate is higher among elderly people. The anterior cannulated screw fixation has been widely used in odontoid process fracture, but the fixation strength may still be limited under some circumstances. This study aims to investigate the biomechanical fixation strength of expansive double-threaded bi-direction...

SUMMARY This Report describes an investigation into the tensile and torsional properties of DTD 5025 magnesium alloy castings. Strength and stiffness values are given, and the variation of these parameters between different batches and manufacturers is shown. The effect on mechanical properties of long and short term temperature environments is mdwated.

The mechanical behavior of freestanding thin sputter-deposited films of Au is studied at temperatures up to 340°C using tensile testing. Films tested at elevated temperatures exhibit a significant decrease in flow stress and stiffness. Furthermore the flow stress decreases with decreasing film thickness, contravening the usual notion that “smaller is stronger”. This behavior is attributed mainl...

Ligaments are regularly subjected to repetitive loading in vivo. Typically, mechanical studies focus on repetitive loading protocols of short duration, while those characterizing damage accumulation over a longer duration (i.e., fatigue studies) are lacking. The aims of this study were as follows: (a) to demonstrate that damage does accumulate in ligament tissue subjected to repetitive loading ...

OBJECTIVE To provide evidence for the hypothesis that the loss of tensile strength of osteoarthritic (OA) cartilage (resulting in swelling-the hallmark of OA) is due to an impaired collagen network and not to loss or degradation of proteoglycans. METHODS The amount of degraded collagen molecules, the fixed charge density (FCD) on a dry-weight basis, the degree of swelling in saline, and the i...

Objective: Stiffness is a characteristic of viscoelastic structures and is an effective factor in sports movement biomechanics, which is an important factor in motion production and neuromechanical control of human body. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between lower extremity stiffness and selected biomechanical variables during vertical jumps. Methods: 20 male physi...

The distributed plasticity of pentatwinned silver nanowires has been revealed in recent computational and experimental studies. However, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have not considered the imperfections seen in experiments, such as irregular surface undulations, the high aspect ratio of nanowires, and the stiffness of loading devices. In this work, we report the effect of such inher...

We study the dispersion characteristics of strained graphene using many-body interatomic potentials and find: (i) borders of the structural stability of a flat graphene in the three-dimensional space of the strain components (exx, eyy, exy); (ii) sound velocities of strained graphene; and (iii) phonon density of states (DOS) of strained graphene. The border of structural stability of flat graphen...
