In this study, we analyzed diet, sexual dimorphism and bromeliad use in three populations of the hylid frog Phyllodytes luteolus from restinga habitats along the Brazilian coast. We found 13 arthropods categories in 161 stomachs. Ants and termites were the dominant prey items. The similar trophic niche across populations suggests this species has a conservative diet. We found sexual dimorphism ...

Attending high school can alter students’ life trajectories by affecting labor market prospects and through exposure to ideas and networks. However, schooling’s influence competes with early socialization forces, and may be confounded by selection biases. Consequently, little is known about whether or how high school education shapes downstream political preferences and voting behavior. Using a...

In this study, bullying is examined in light of the "prosocial security hypothesis"- i.e., the hypothesis that insecure attachment, with temperamental dispositions such as sensation seeking, may foster individualistic, competitive value orientations and problem behaviors. A group of 375 Italian students (53% female; Mean age = 12.58, SD = 1.08) completed anonymous questionnaires regarding attac...

Several works have pointed out that local dispersion plays a crucial role in determining the behavior of the concentration variance and coef¿cient of variation over time for conservative tracers. Numerical investigations aimed at evaluating the effect of the local dispersivity on dilution time scales are performed using a random-walk particle-tracking method model applied to transport of conser...

This paper analyzes the behavior of a variety of tracking algorithms for single-layer threshold networks in the presence of random drift. We use a system identification model to model a target network where weights slowly change and a tracking network. Tracking algorithms are divided into conservative and nonconservative algorithms. For a random drift rate of , we find upper bounds for the gene...

Intestinal subocclusion is a clinical picture characterized by an incomplete interruption of the distal progression of the intestinal contents, and it may be due to multiple causes. We present here the case of a 20-year-old male with severe hemophilia A who developed symptoms of periumbilical abdominal pain and intestinal subocclusion. The CT scan revealed submucosal hemorrhage in the jejunum a...

Critics of evolutionary psychology and sociobiology have advanced an adaptationists-as-right-wing-conspirators (ARC) hypothesis, suggesting that adaptationists use their research to support a right-wing political agenda. We report the first quantitative test of the ARC hypothesis based on an online survey of political and scientific attitudes among 168 US psychology Ph.D. students, 31 of whom s...

We develop the theory of canonical-dissipative systems, based on the assumption that both the conservative and the dissipative elements of the dynamics are determined by invariants of motion. In this case, known solutions for conservative systems can be used for an extension of the dynamics, which also includes elements such as the takeup/dissipation of energy. This way, a rather complex dynami...

This paper is devoted to the analysis of a numerical scheme for the coagulation and fragmentation equation. A time explicit finite volume scheme is developed, based on a conservative formulation of the equation. It is shown to converge under a stability condition on the time step, while a first order rate of convergence is established and an explicit error estimate is given. Finally, several nu...

Timed and weak timed simulation relations are often used to show that operations on hybrid systems result in equivalent behavior or in conservative overapproximations. Given that systems are frequently designed and verified in a modular approach, it is desirable that this relationship is compositional, which is not the case for hybrid systems in general. We identify subclasses of linear hybrid ...
