A perfect creative evolutionary design system is impossible to achieve, but in this position paper we discuss 10 steps that might bring us a little closer to this dream. These important problems and requirements have been identified as a result of both authors’ experiences on a number of projects in this area. While our solutions may not solve all of the problems, they illustrate what we regard...

In this paper, the concept of pseudoconvexity and quasiconvexity for continuous~-time functions are studied and an equivalence condition for pseudoconvexity is obtained. Moreover, under pseudoconvexity assumptions, some relationships between Minty and Stampacchia vector variational inequalities and continuous-time programming problems are presented. Finally, some characterizations of the soluti...

We use super-paramagnetic spherical particles which are arranged in a two-dimensional monolayer at a water/air interface to investigate the crystal to liquid phase transition. According to the KTHNY theory a crystal melts in thermal equilibrium by two continuous phase transitions into the isotropic liquid state with an intermediate phase, commonly known as the hexatic phase. We verify the signi...

[1] We present experimental results on the snow drift in a turbulent boundary layer over a flat fresh snow-covered surface. Vertical profiles of mass flux and of the distribution of particle diameters were obtained by means of a pair of Snow Particle Counters parallel with measurements of the stream-wise velocity profile. The aim of the paper is to discuss current parameterizations of the verti...

Complications may arise during enteral feeding that are usually related to the diameter and rigidity of the tube or the delivery, composition, and sterility of the feed uses. By using a soft, fine bore tube to deliver a sterile feed of known composition, by continuous infusion rather than as a bolus, most of these complications can be avoided.

We have recently shown that the vacuum-deposited complex [Fe(II)L(NCS)2] (L: 1-{6-[1,1-di(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl]-pyridin-2-yl}-N,N-dimethylmethanamine) is capable of a thermally induced spin crossover (SCO) in direct contact with a graphite surface. The SCO significantly differs from the transition behaviour in the bulk phase (powder). In the present work, the assumption of virtually no intermolec...

We report the characteristics of a flux locked, superfluid 4He interferometer that can continuously measure time-varying rotation rates. We describe the principles underlying the interferometer, including the dynamics of a superfluid chemical potential battery used to obtain continuous operation. We also discuss noise and drift issues and their possible amelioration.

Blood pressure (BP) monitors rely on pulse detection. Some blood pressure monitors use pulse timings to analyse pulse interval variability for arrhythmia screening, but this assumes that the pulse interval timings detected from BP cuffs are accurate compared with RR intervals derived from ECG. In this study we compared the accuracy of pulse intervals detected using an ambulatory blood pressure ...

Transitions in behaviour across a continuous distribution of organisms can provide valuable information on how variation in behaviour is maintained. We used analyses developed for interspecific hybrid zones to examine geographic variation in colony founding strategy in the desert seed-harvester ant, Messor pergandei. Newly mated females initiate new colonies either alone (haplometrosis) or coop...

Spontaneous emulsification through microchannels, in which droplets are formed due to Laplace pressure difference, is a relatively new technique for preparing monodisperse emulsions. The technique is extremely suited for products containing temperature and shear sensitive ingredients and for products that require high monodispersity; however, industrial application is still not possible due to ...
