In this paper, the problem of large pure bending deformations of membrane is considered. The membrane is a sector of torus with a closed cross-section. This membrane is called a curved tube for short. We consider the homogenous, incompressible, isotropic and hyperelastic material. The external load is a constant pressure and bending couples acting at the edges. The equilibrium equations reduce ...

Endotracheal tubes (ETTs) constitute a resistive extra load for intubated patients. The ETT pressure drop (DeltaP(ETT)) is usually described by empirical equations that are specific to one ETT only. Our laboratory previously showed that, in adult ETTs, DeltaP(ETT) is given by the Blasius formula (F. Lofaso, B. Louis, L. Brochard, A. Harf, and D. Isabey. Am. Rev. Respir. Dis. 146: 974-979, 1992)...

introduction: the exact measurement of the root canal length is of great importance in root canal therapy. although, determination of the root canal length through radiography is the most common method, recently electronic apex locators are being used to determine working length and decrease the number of radiographs. the purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of an electronic apex l...

A master element to be employed as a general spatial rod finite element is presented. This spatially curved and pretwisted element can have variable cross-section and variable curvature change. It may also be resting on an elastic foundation. Also, a finite element formulation for a general earthquake analysis of spatial rods is presented. The theoretical foundation has lead to a general-purpos...

Electrohydrodynamic inkjet printing of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is de-monstrated to form complex geometric devices with high resolution (line width ≈ 5 mm). Both planar and highly curved surfaces (radius of curvature ≈ 60 mm) can be used as substrates. Demonstrations of counterfeit coin recognition using RGO patterns and all-printed RGO transistors suggest substantial promise for applicatio...

We consider a σ-model formulation of open string theory in the presence of D-branes. We perform two-loop computations and discuss gravitational corrections to Born-Infeld action when branes are non-trivially embedded in a curved ambient space. In particular for the case of a stack of N coincident D-branes we analyze couplings of the form Rijkl [Φ Φ ][ΦΦ].

We propose a paradigm for analyzing problems involving complex curved surfaces in a manner suit.able for practical implementation. Rather than deriving closed-form expressions for certain surfaces and problems, we propose to reformulate the problem in a higher dimensional space with more variables but simpler equations, thus avoiding complex symbolic manipulation and numerically delicate operat...

On the basis of original design Ruck Bridge by Mr. Lin Tongyan, this paper modifies single-amplitude curved cable-stayed bridge to be an elliptical ring main beam two-amplitude deck, with a duck-egg-shaped arch tower and spatial cable net four planes, form four-cable-plane two-amplitude-curve for canyon-river topography, so as improve structural stress performance curved-beam bridge, promote tr...

Drosophila bristles display a precise orientation and curvature. An asymmetric extension of the socket cell overlies the newly emerging bristle rudiment to provide direction for bristle elongation, a process thought to be orchestrated by the nerve dendrite lying between these cells. Scanning electron microscopic analysis of individual bristles showed that curvature is planar and far greater nea...
