Using first principles, it is demonstrated that radiative damping alone cannot lead to a nonvanishing electro-optic effect in a chiral isotropic medium. This conclusion is in contrast with that obtained by a calculation in which damping effects are included using the standard phenomenological model. We show that these predictions differ because the phenomenological damping equations are valid o...

We present theoretical and experimental results on the mechanical damping of an atomic force microscope cantilever strongly coupled to a self-assembled InAs quantum dot. When the cantilever oscillation amplitude is large, its motion dominates the charge dynamics of the dot which in turn leads to nonlinear, amplitude-dependent damping of the cantilever. We observe highly asymmetric line shapes o...

A wave model is proposed for estimating damping loss factor as a function of frequency for a beam with arbitrary transient loading applied through the boundary conditions. In contrast to modal methods which provide measures of damping only at the modal frequencies of the test structure, the damping factor is determined over discrete, but regularly spaced, frequency values associated with the te...

This study makes use of an energy balance to identify damping parameters in mechanical vibration systems. By balancing the energy input as registered in the force-displacement relationship of the real system against the energy lost theoretically in a damping model with unknown parameters, the identification algorithms are developed. We apply the estimation equations to both numerical and experi...

The mean first passage time of a Brownian particle from an initial unstable state in a metastable system with damping is investigated. The system is analyzed in the low to high damping regime, and the role played by the damping parameter is studied. We observe the noise enhanced stability effect for all the initial unstable states under study and for all values of the damping parameter γ invest...

Abstract—Weak damping of low frequency oscillations is a frequent phenomenon in electrical power systems. These frequencies can be damped by power system stabilizers. Unified power flow controller (UPFC), as one of the most important FACTS devices, can be applied to increase the damping of power system oscillations and the more effect of this controller on increasing the damping of oscillations...

A general procedure is outlined for optimizing the damping of an input filter using a single resistor. This procedure is employed to derive the equations governing optimal damping of several basic filter circuits. Design tradeoffs are discussed. Additional criteria are derived that allow employment of these results in design of multiple-section cascaded filters with damping.

For FRF based model updating procedures, the selection of updating frequencies and the choice of a damping approach are important factors to obtain reliable updating resuns. This paper discusses the selection of the updating frequencies and shows that damping approaches like proportional, structural or modal damping are not satisfactory for model updating purposes.

This work explored how the perception of violin notes is influenced by the magnitude of the applied vibrato and by the level of damping of the violin resonance modes. Damping influences the "peakiness" of the frequency response, and vibrato interacts with this peakiness by producing fluctuations in spectral content as well as in frequency and amplitude. Initially, it was shown that thresholds f...
