Recent work identifies two properties that appear particularly relevant to the characterization of graph-based dependency models of syntactic structure: the absence of interleaving substructures (well-nestedness) and a bound on a type of discontinuity (gap-degree ≤ 1) successfully describe more than 99% of the structures in two dependency treebanks (Kuhlmann and Nivre 2006). Bodirsky et al. (20...
In this paper, we propose an alternative to interlingua which can capture the analyses and generalizations that interlinguas can express, but which uses cross-linguistic semantic features rather than a separate level of representation. This alternative we call lexico-structural transfer. Lexico-structural transfer relies on the expressive power of a lexicalized syntactic representation (or “lex...
A grammar model for concurrent, object-oriented natural language parsing is introduced. Complete lexical distribution of grammatical knowledge is achieved building upon the head-oriented notions of valency and dependency, while inheritance mechanisms are used to capture lexical generalizations. The underlying concurrent computation model relies upon the actor paradigm. We consider message passi...
Categorial Dependency Grammars (CDG) introduced in this paper express projective and distant dependencies in classical categorial grammar terms. They treat order constraints in terms of oriented polarized valencies and a bounded commutativity rule. CDGs are expressive, constitute a convenient frame for coupling dependency grammars with linguistic semantics, and with all this, they are parsed in...
We provide a theoretical argument that a common form of projective transitionbased dependency parsing is less powerful than constituent parsing using latent variables. The argument is a proof that, under reasonable assumptions, a transition-based dependency parser can be converted to a latent-variable context-free grammar producing equivalent structures.
This paper discusses methodological strengths and shortcomings of the Constraint Grammar paradigm (CG), showing how the classical CG formalism can be extended to achieve greater expressive power and how it can be enhanced and hybridized with techniques from other parsing paradigms. We present a new, largely theoryindependent CG framework and rule compiler (CG3), that allows the linguist to wr...
In this paper we present work in progress on the annotation of an Italian Corpus (CORIS) developed at CILTA (University of Bologna). We induce categorial type assignments from a dependency treebank (Torino University treebank, TUT) and use the obtained categories with annotated dependency relations to study the distributional behavior of Italian words and reach an empirically founded part-of-sp...
In this paper, we construct upper and lower convex order bounds for the distribution of a sum of non-independent log-elliptical random variables. These bounds are applications of the ideas developed in Kaas, Dhaene & Goovaerts (2000). The class of multivariate log-elliptical random variables is an extension of the class of multivariate log-normal random variables. Hence, the results presented h...
In some applications of opinion mining in text, it is important to distinguish what an author is talking about from the subjective stance towards the topic. Therefore, it needs to find the relation between sentiment expression and target. This paper proposes a novel method based on dependency grammars to mine the relation. In this method, the process of mining the relations is turned into a pro...
