A new resource abstraction called Path is introduced in the framework of resource reservation for the optimization of user applications. A network Path is allocated in an on-demand fashion using a number of different signaling methods and is built using a chain of Path Elements that may belong to different administrative domains. Three different implementation technologies are presented: DiffSe...
There is a growing interest in providing Internet services to the mobile nodes. When mobile nodes travel from one router's service area to another, the time-sensitive applications may see degradation in service. We investigate into the effects of handoff on service quality of mobile nodes. Several experiments are conducted using various packet-metering schemes with or without transferring profi...
We evaluate the beaviour of a implementation of a Differentiated Services router based on a Linux PC. Our results show, that both per-hop-behaviours — expedited and assured forwarding — are able to provide a guaranteed bandwidth together with a very small delay and jitter even in a highly congested network.
This paper discusses techniques for achieving desired throughput guarantees in the Internet that supports diierentiated services framework. Dii-serv framework proposes using diierent drop precedences to achieve soft service guarantees over Internet. However, it has been observed that the drop precedences by themselves cannot achieve the desired target rates because of the strong interaction of ...
The increased need for Quality of Service (QoS) in today’s networks has concentrated a lot of research and implementation efforts. Particular interest exists for the exploitation of the DiffServ framework towards the provision of qualitative services in MANs and WANs worldwide. Although individual mechanisms have been widely investigated, not many references to studies combining all levels of p...
The primary role of admission control in Quality of Service enabled networks is to control the amount of traffic injected into the network so that congestion is avoided. We consider IP Differentiated services networks able to support realtime traffic and we present a Measurement-based Admission Control (MBAC) scheme that uses only measurements of aggregate bandwidth without keeping track of any...
In this paper, design alternatives for supporting realtime traffic in a differentiated services IP network node are studied. A scheduling algorithm called weighted earliest due date (WEDD) is proposed that provides tunable delay differentiation for applications like video or voice over IP. WEDD enhances the earliest due date (EDD) scheduling mechanism in such a way that not only different delay...
In this paper we present a framework for the emerging Internet Quality of Service (QoS). All the important components of this framework, i.e., Integrated Services, RSVP, Differentiated Services, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Constraint Based Routing are covered. We describe what Integrated Services and Differentiated Services are, how they can be implemented, and the problems they h...
This paper discusses a load distribution strategy for distributed object computing systems. Our strategy relies on dynamic monitoring and application profiling to manage workloads and improve the system performance of nondedicated clusters of heterogeneous computers. Application profiling and the combined use of load balancing mechanisms have proven useful to deal with services with a different...
While Differentiated Services (DiffServ) offer a suitable technology support for Quality-of-Service (QoS) in multi-service networks, appropriate and technically feasible pricing schemes are lacking, mainly to provide an incentive for customers to choose efficiently among various service classes. This paper presents the basics of an implementation of recent developments in the area of charging d...
