This work explores prosodic cues of disfluencies in a corpus of university lectures. Results show three significant (p < 0.001) trends: pitch and energy slopes are significantly different between the disfluency and the onset of fluency; those features are also relevant to disfluency type differentiation; and they do not seem to be a speakereffect. The best combination of linguistic features one...
While previous studies have successfully revealed areas vulnerable to disfluency at the word level in stuttering, identifying the specific factors responsible for this instability has proved difficult. Analyzing the effects of phrasal prosody, which governs such word-level factors as lexical stress [1], is critical in order to account for the relations between wordlevel and phrase-level effects...
BACKGROUND the use of a technological resource in fluency promotion. AIM to verify the effectiveness of a stuttering treatment based on the use of surface electromyography (SEMG) exclusively. METHOD participants were four stuttering adults of both genders. Assessment, pre and post-treatment, consisted of a speech gathering session and the analyses of the rest tension and of the reaction tim...
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to assess the relation of behavioral inhibition to stuttering and speech/language output in preschool-age children who do (CWS) and do not stutter (CWNS). METHOD Participants were preschool-age (ages 36-68 months), including 26 CWS (22 males) and 28 CWNS (13 males). Participants' behavioral inhibition (BI) was assessed by measuring the latency to their si...
Disfluencies such as self-repairs, filled pauses such as ‘um’ and silent pauses are pervasive in dialogue, but there is no consensus in the literature as to whether they reflect internal production pressures, or interactive issues – or how their effects are manifest in dialogue. It is well-known that patients with schizophrenia have problems with language and social cognitive skills, yet little...
This document presents a streamlined approach to modeling filled pause distribution in spontaneous speech and populating a large clean corpus, making use of only the SRILM toolkit and a small training set. Although used for filled pause modeling, it can be fairly general and may be used to model other types of disfluencies, punctuation or sentence boundaries, with a minimal set of changes.
PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to evaluate and document the use and efficacy of intensive non-avoidance group treatment for Bulgarian adults who stutter (AWS), to specify that changes are adopted in different speech situations (in the stabilization phase), and to demonstrate that changes are maintained after intensive therapy. METHODS Participants were AWS (n=15, 12 males) with ...
