Kawasaki disease (KD) is an enigmatic, self-limited vasculitis of childhood that is complicated by development of coronary-artery aneurysms. The high incidence of KD in Asian versus European populations prompted a search for genetic polymorphisms that are differentially distributed among these populations and that influence KD susceptibility. Here, we demonstrate a striking, inverse relationshi...
The direct and indirect boundary element methods, accelerated via the fast multipole method, are applied to numerical simulation of room acoustics for large rooms volume $\sim 150$ $m^{3}$ frequencies up 5 kHz on a workstation. As parameter $kD$ (wavenumber times diameter) is large, stabilization previously developed FMM algorithms required accuracy. A scheme one key contribution this paper. co...
We devise a simple modification that essentially doubles the efficiency of a well-known quantum key distribution scheme proposed by Bennett and Brassard (BB84). Our scheme assigns significantly different probabilities for the different polarization bases during both transmission and reception to reduce the fraction of discarded data. The actual probabilities used in the scheme are announced in ...
A protein of 62 kD is a substrate of a calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase, and both proteins copurify with isolated mitotic apparatuses (Dinsmore, J. H., and R. D. Sloboda. 1988. Cell. 53:769-780). Phosphorylation of the 62-kD protein increases after fertilization; maximum incorporation of phosphate occurs during late metaphase and anaphase and correlates directly with microtubule disa...
Bacteriogenic iron oxides (BIOS) and groundwater samples were collected from 66 to 432 m underground at the È Asp È o Hard Rock Laboratory near Oskarshamn, Sweden. The twisted, iron oxide± encrusted stalks of the lithoautotrophic ferrous iron± oxidizing bacterium Gallionella ferruginea were prominent in the BIOS samples. A wide variety of heterotrophic bacteria, including stalked forms resembli...
Abstract The average composition of natural waters such as rivers, lakes, ocean, and hydrothermal vents and corresponding solids in equilibrium (e.g., river-suspended particles or shale; lake sediments; oceanic pelagic clay, organisms, and manganese nodules; and the mid-ocean ridge basalts) do not change randomly. The observed positive correlation between the electron binding energy (Iz [*Iz]) ...
The CHO cell mutant FD 1.3.25 exhibits both increased accumulation and altered distribution of endocytosed fluid phase tracers. Neither the rate of tracer internalization nor the kinetics of recycling from early endosomes was affected, but exocytosis from late endocytic compartments appeared to be decreased in the mutant. Endocytosed tracer moved more rapidly to the cell poles in FD1.3.25 than ...
We cloned a novel ankyrin, Ank3, from mouse kidney cDNA. The full-length transcript is predicted to encode a 214-kD protein containing an 89 kD, NH2 terminal "repeat" domain; a 65 kD, central "spectrin-binding" domain; and a 56 kD, COOH-terminal "regulatory" domain. The Ank3 gene maps to mouse Chromosome 10, approximately 36 cM from the centromere, a locus distinct from Ank1 and Ank2. Ank3 is t...
Co(II) and Cu(II) promoted base hydrolysis of 2-cyano, 1, lO-phenanthroline was studied. At 298.2°K, Cu(II) reaction is more efficient (by a factor of 20) than either Co(ll) and its analogues Ni(II) in promoting base hydrolysis.
