Enterobacter spp. have been implicated as opportunistic pathogens which over the years have gained resistance toward most of the available therapeutic drugs. We sequenced two multidrug-resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolates harboring multiple efflux pump genes. These isolates exhibited strain-specific modulation of efflux pump protein expression.
Vaborbactam (formerly RPX7009) is a new beta-lactamase inhibitor based on a cyclic boronic acid pharmacophore. The spectrum of beta-lactamase inhibition by vaborbactam and the impact of bacterial efflux and permeability on its activity were determined using a panel of strains with beta-lactamases cloned from various classes and a panel of Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase 3 (KPC-3)-producing ...
The staphylococcal multidrug efflux pump QacA mediates resistance to a broad spectrum of monovalent and divalent antimicrobial cations. Resistance toward various classes of these compounds identified features of the substrate that may be important for interaction with QacA. Analysis of combinations of two substrates suggested that the same mechanism is used for the extrusion of different classe...
The cardiac glycoside ouabain, which is a specific inhibitor of the Na+,K+-pump, confers dramatic protection from the cytotoxic effects of doxorubicin (Adriamycin). This effect was documented in cultured A549 cells (human lung adenocarcinoma). CCL210 cells (human fibroblasts), and V79 cells (hamster fibroblasts). Maximum protection from doxorubicin cytotoxicity was achieved using 1 microM ouaba...
For over 20 years, bacterial multidrug resistance (MDR) efflux pumps have been studied because of their impact on resistance to antimicrobials. However, critical questions remain, including why produce efflux pumps under non-antimicrobial treatment conditions, and why have multiple pumps if their only purpose is antimicrobial efflux? Salmonella spp. possess five efflux pump families, including ...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical distribution and genotyping of Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, its resistance to antimicrobial agents, and the possible mechanisms of this drug resistance. METHODS S. maltophilia isolates were collected from clinical specimens in a university hospital in Northwestern China during the period between 2010 and 2012, and were ident...
