Introduction Gears are highly engineered machine elements that must be designed not only to meet the torque, speed, life and noise requirements under nominal conditions, but also to compensate for adverse effects due to manufacturing errors, variations and elastic deformations of the support structures. In addition to the elastic deformation of the support and structures, manufacturing errors i...

cold rolling process of a major transformation in the form of sheet metal and a wide range of steel products are produced in this way. elastic deformation during cold rolling working rollers and the inevitable increase in the rolling force. in this study, the effect of elastic deformation during cold rolling mill rollers working on the reciprocating back and forth in tandem with the presence of...

in this paper, the radial breathing mode (rbm) frequencies of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (mwcnts) are  obtained based on the multiple-elastic thin shell model. for this purpose, mwcnt is considered as a multiple concentric elastic thin cylindrical shells, which are coupled through van der waals (vdw) forces between two adjacent tubes. lennard-jones potential is used to calculate the vdw forc...

In the present study normal plate-impact experiments are conducted to investigate the propagation of acceleration waves in 2-D layered material systems. The objective of these experiments is to understand the role of material architecture and material inelasticity in controlling precursor decay and late-time dispersion of acceleration waves in elastic-elastic and elasticviscoelastic laminates. ...

We report direct observation of a "Pac-Man" like coarsening mechanism of a self-supporting thin film of nickel oxide. The ultrathin film has an intrinsic morphological instability due to surface stress leading to the development of local thicker regions at step edges. Density functional theory calculations and continuum modeling of the elastic instability support the model for the process.

Titanium coated PEEK cages incorporate the advantages of both PEEK, which offers a native-like elastic modulus and a radiolucent behaviour, and Titanium which provides improved biocompatibility and promotes osseointegration. In this study, we evaluated the response of Titanium plasma sprayed PEEK cages to provide safe support of the lumbar spine and promote bony fusion.

There are derived sufficient conditions for the posltivity of Green's function of two-point boundary value problems of the fourth order. The results are gained by applying a theorem on Inverse-monoton o operators In partially ordered spaces. In the case of an example (beam on elastic support), the derived conditions are also necessary.

The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanical adaptations linked to economical locomotion in cursorial bipeds. We addressed this question by comparing mass-matched humans and avian bipeds (ostriches), which exhibit marked differences in limb structure and running economy. We hypothesized that the nearly 50 per cent lower energy cost of running in ostriches is a result of: (i) lower li...

A computational study is performed to determine the contribution to ultrasound attenuation in carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite laminates of linear elastic scattering by matrix micro-cracking. Multiple scattering approximations are benchmarked against exact computational approaches. Results support linear scattering as the source of observed increased attenuation in the presence of micr...

Structured hydrogels showing form stability and elastic properties individually tailorable on different length scales are accessible in a one-step process. They support cell adhesion and differentiation and display growing pore size during degradation. In vivo experiments demonstrate their efficacy in biomaterial-induced bone regeneration, not requiring addition of cells or growth factors.
