First evidence and the mechanism of formation of closed bilayer structures by a single chain amino acid ionic liquid (IL), L-proline isopropylester laurylsulfate in both hydrophilic and hydrophobic ILs, is reported. Such ionic self-assemblies are shown to be guided by fine balance of solvophobic effects and ionic arrangements via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions.

Controlled aggregation of perylene bisimides in multiple modes has been achieved via symmetric substitution with peptides. Using optical probes of aggregation, the balance of hydrophobic and electrostatic forces are found to play a key role in directing self assembly and are exploited via solvent, pH, and specific extrinsic ion effects.

Light-responsive artificial ion channels are created using self-organized TiO(2) nanotubular arrays, whose ion transport properties can be regulated by external ultraviolet light. The formation of electrostatic traps within TiO(2) nanotubes by UV light contributes to the light-regulated ion transport.
