The nose bridge between the inlet valve and exhaust valve is the most fragile part on the cylinder head. Fatigue crack is the major failure mode. It is necessary to analyze the structure strength and reliability (SSR) of this zone. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) model for a engine cylinder head is built up using Pro/Engineer wildfire 2.0, and the 3D FEM analysis of the SSR is carried o...
Data obtained from Nary calibration tests of an 18-cylinder, two-row, radial engine of 8350-cubic-inch displacement and a 14-cylinder, two-row, radial engine of 2600-cubic-inch displacement {carburetor types) were analyzed to show the correlation between the air consumption of these engines and the parameters that evaluate the air consumption from intake-manifold temperature and pressure, exhau...
Combustion is the main type of noise radiated from diesel engines. Several methods have been devised to reduce the noise levels. Fourier tranformation methods along with block attenuation curves have been used to study the correlation between cylinder pressure and noise radiated from engines. In this work wavelet method has been used to study noisee mitted from a dual injection diesel engine. T...
This paper investigates optimal strategies for minimising the conflicting objectives of fuel consumption and warm up duration following an engine cold start. Using a reduced order model, parametric solutions for the optimal air-fuel ratio, valve timing, cam timing and idle speed setpoint are sought in the presence of input constraints. The results are then validated using a dynamic programming ...
This paper presents an investigation report of different components failure which affect the performance of an automobile engine. The premature breakage of a four cylinder diesel engine block, crankshaft, camshaft, crankshaft bearing, camshaft bush, engine oil pump was reported. It is found that the failure of each component having the same reason for its failure as reported from different plac...
We present techniques of symbolic time-series analysis which are useful for analyzing temporal patterns in dynamic measurements of engine combustion variables. We focus primarily on techniques that characterize predictability and the occurrence of repeating temporal patterns. These methods can be applied to standard, cycle-resolved engine combustion measurements, such as IMEP and heat release. ...
A model of a flat triple pendulum with obstacles imposed on its position is used for the modelling of a piston-connecting rod-crankshaft system of a mono-cylinder four-stroke combustion engine. The introduced selfexcited system can be only treated as the first step in more advanced modelling of real processes, but some examples of numerical simulations exhibit well known six stages of the pisto...
We analyze the experimental time series of internal pressure in a four cylinder spark ignition engine. In our experiment, performed for different spark advance angles, apart from the usual cyclic changes of engine pressure we observed additional oscillations. These oscillations are with longer time scales ranging from one to several hundred engine cycles depending on engine working conditions. ...
