Escherichia albertii has been recently recognized as an emerging human and bird enteric pathogen. Here, we report the first complete chromosome nucleotide sequence of a clinical isolate of E. albertii strain KF1, which may provide information about the pathogenic potential of this new species and the mechanisms of evolution of enteropathogenic Escherichia spp.
We report the first Shiga toxin 2-producing Acinetobacter haemolyticus strain that was isolated from the feces of a 3-month-old infant with bloody diarrhea. Usual enteropathogenic bacteria were not detected. This finding suggests that any Shiga toxin-producing microorganism capable of colonizing the human gut may have the potential to cause illness.
Rabbit-specific enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (REPEC) is an attaching and effacing pathogen of young rabbits. Using signature-tagged mutagenesis, we identified several known colonization factors of REPEC as well as a gene predicted to encode a novel autotransporter protein. This novel gene was termed rpeA for REPEC plasmid-encoded autotransporter.
The isolation of a strain of Campylobacter hyointestinalis from a piglet is described. The animal originated from a farm where another animal showed signs of intestinal adenomatosis. The animal from which the isolation was made had diarrhoea, and an enteropathogenic Escherichia coli was also isolated. No pathological changes indicative of intestinal adenomatosis were detected in this animal.
The production of the bundle-forming pilus subunit BfpA was investigated in 44 enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) diarrheal isolates after growth on several conventional bacteriological media. In all, the use of brucella agar supplemented with 4.5 mM sodium bisulfite resulted in a higher detection of BfpA-producing EPEC.
Serogroup O80 was detected in 40% of 104 enteropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates from calves with diarrhea from 42 farms in Belgium during 2008‒2015. These isolates harbored the eae-ξ and fliCH2 genes, similar to the O80 attaching-effacing Shigatoxigenic E. coli isolates found in humans in France. This strain might be emerging.
