Introduction : Viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (CNS) infection, and more than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. Molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are increasingly used to detect and type non-polio enteroviruses. Here, we describe the impact of these viruses on asept...
The whole-genome sequences of seven fatal enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains, isolated in southern China, in 2014, were determined. The complete genome sequences of these strains displayed close relationships to native EV71 strains and showed 94.2% to 99.8% identity to each other. All of these strains were assigned to subgenotype C4a based on phylogenetic analysis of the VP1 gene.
Enteroviruses comprise highly diverse group of single-stranded positive RNA viruses belonging to Enterovirus genus, Picornaviridae family. They are the most prevalent worldwide highlighted by high resistance environmental cues. normally cause seasonal self-limiting infections, but also known as causative infectious agents encephalitis, myocarditis, poliomyelitis, acute heart failure and sepsis....
The family Picornaviridae consists of a large group of plus-strand RNA viruses that share a similar genome organization. The nomenclature of the picornavirus proteins is based on their position in the viral RNA genome but does not necessarily imply a conserved function of proteins of different genera. The enterovirus 2B protein is a small hydrophobic protein that, upon individual expression, is...
There are no currently available specific antiviral therapies for non-polio Enterovirus infections. Although several vaccines have entered clinical trials, the efficacy requires further evaluation, particularly for cross-strain protective activity. Curing patients with viral infections is a public health problem due to antigen alterations and drug resistance caused by the high genomic mutation ...
The Amplicor Enterovirus PCR test was compared with viral culture for the detection of enteroviruses in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens. In a multicenter study in which nine laboratories participated, a total of 476 CSF specimens were collected from patients with suspected aseptic meningitis. Sixty-eight samples were positive by PCR (14.4%), whereas 49 samples were positive by culture (10.4...
OBJECTIVES A persistent infection of enteroviruses and cardioviruses has been implicated in polymyositis and dermatomyositis, but conventional hybridisation studies of the presence of enterovirus RNA and encephalomyocarditis (EMC) virus RNA in affected muscle have yielded conflicting results. To investigate further the possibility of viral persistence, the presence of viral RNA in muscle from p...
Enterovirus infections are common in the neonatal period. Newborns are at a higher risk of severe disease including meningoencephalitis, sepsis syndrome, cardiovascular collapse, or hepatitis. The mechanism of heart failure in patients with enterovirus infection remains unknown. Early diagnosis may help clinicians predict complications in those infants initially presenting with severe disease. ...
An outbreak of acute flaccid paralysis among children in the United States during summer 2014 was tentatively associated with enterovirus D68 infection. This syndrome in a child in fall 2014 was associated with enterovirus C105 infection. The presence of this virus strain in North America may pose a diagnostic challenge.
