We derive scaling laws for the number of atoms, collision rate, and phase-space density as a function of trap depth for evaporative cooling in an adiabadically lowered optical trap. The results are in excellent agreement with a Boltzmann equation model and show that very large increases in phase-space density can be obtained without excessive slowing of the evaporation rate. Predictions are in ...
We describe the realization of a magnetically guided beam of cold rubidium atoms, with a flux of 7 x 10(9) atoms/s, a temperature of 400 microK, and a mean velocity of 1 m/s. The rate of elastic collisions within the beam is sufficient to ensure thermalization. We show that the evaporation induced by a radio-frequency wave leads to appreciable cooling and an increase in the phase space density....
This paper provides a brief summary of current solar cooling technologies based on a literature review of 16 journal articles. The REDD facility at DRI currently uses two methods of cooling: an absorption chiller driven by solar thermal, and an evaporative cooler which can be run off of solar photovoltaic. This literature search is to identify what are the best technologies to convert solar ene...
Passive cooling techniques have been used mostly in countries with hot and arid climates such as Iran, Egypt, and India. However, the use of this important technology has not been seriously considered until a time of energy crisis, and consequently, environmental crisis scenarios, emerge. Scholars have renewed their interest in investigating passive cooling technology, particularly the aspects ...
