Objective(s):blaCTX-Mand blaPER are two genes that encode class A extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) and can be responsible for therapeutic problems. This study was carried out to evaluate the molecular properties of these genes in clinical isolates of Enterobacteriaceae by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction digestion and sequencing. Materials and Methods: During six months, start...

background: resistance to contemporary broad-spectrum b-lactam antibiotics mediated by extended-spectrum b-lactamases (esbls) is increasing worldwide. klebsiella pneumoniae , an important cause of nosocomial and community acquired urinary tract infections has rapidly become the most common esbl producing organism. we examined esbl production in urinary isolates of k. pneumoniae in relation to t...

The objective of this study was to determine whether antibiotic exposure is associated with extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase- or AmpC-producing Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae infections in children. We collected extended-spectrum-beta-lactamase- or AmpC-producing E. coli or K. pneumoniae isolates and same-species susceptible controls from normally sterile sites of patients aged ≤21 y...

Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates frequently contain complex mixtures of bla(SHV) alleles. A high-resolution melting-based method for interrogating the extended-spectrum activity conferring codon 238 and 240 polymorphisms was developed. This detects minority extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-encoding alleles, allows estimation of allele ratios, and discriminates between single and double mutants.

Background Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are enzymes produced by some gram negative bacilli that mediate resistance to extended-spectrum cephalosporins and aztreonam. ESBLs are commonly recognized in a variety of Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. This study focused on the prevalence of ESBL producing strains from diabetes patients and their antimicrobial correl...

Abstract Background and Objective: CTX-M type extended spectrum beta-lactamases is a rapidly expanding group of enzymes encountered with increasing fre‌quency, especially, in Escherichia coli (E. coli). There are a few reports on phylogenetic background of E. coli isolates from clinical sources of under five-year- old children in Iran. The purpose of this study was phylotyping of E. coli isola...

Beta-lactamase enzymes (BLs) have become the most worrisome mediators of antimicrobial resistance expressed by gram-negative bacteria (GNB). The multiple families of BLs have in common the ability to hydrolyze the -lactam rings of one or more members of the penicillins, cephalosporins, cephamycins, carbapenems, and monobactams. Extended-spectrum -lactamases (ESBLs) are a subset of BLs that conf...

Within the ESBL family the most common genes are temoneira (blaTEM) and sulfhydryl variable (blaSHV) with increasing reports of cefotaximase (blaCTX-M) [4]. The blaSHV and the blaTEM subgroups arise from mutational changes due to point mutations in the genes resulting in subtypes. Examples include blaSHV which differs from blaSHV-1 due to a single mutation of an amino acid from glycine to serin...

BACKGROUND extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing gram negative bacilli are becoming a growing problem worldwide with difficulties in designing a national formulary for empirical treatment of gram negative sepsis. OBJECTIVES In this study, we investigated the in vitro activity of Carbapenems, Pipracillin-Tazobactam, Ciprofloxacin alone or in combination with aminoglycosides against ES...

Extended spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) are defined as enzymes produced by certain bacteria that are able to hydrolyze extended spectrum cephalosporin. They are therefore effective against beta-lactam antibiotics such as ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefotaxime and oxyimino-monobactam. The objective of the current review is to provide a better understanding of ESBL and the epidemiology of ESBL pr...
