The anaerobic binding of Fe 2+ to apo and holo Mammalian ferritin has been studied in the pH range from 6.0 to 10.0. Mossbauer spectroscopy of samples in which the added Fe 2+ is enriched in Fe-57 shows that the Fe 2+ ions bind to the ferritin core and exchange electrons with Fe 3+ ions in the core.

The title compound, [Fe(CF(3)O(3)S)(C(48)H(36)N(4)O(4))], is a five-coordinate iron(III) porphyrin complex with a trifluoro-methane-sulfonate anion as an axial ligand. The Fe(III) atom is displaced by 0.40 (1) Å towards the trifluoro-methane-sulfonate anion from the 24-atom mean plane of the porphyrin. The average Fe-N(p) distance is 2.044 (2) Å and the Fe-O distance is 2.001 (2) Å.

The reactions of FeCl(2) and CoCl(2) with a bistriazolium salt yields the NHC complexes [Fe(III)(L1)(2)]I·H(2)O, [Fe(III)(L2)(2)]PF(6)·CH(3)CN and [Co(III)(L1)(2)]I·0.5CH(3)CN, through an unusual ring opening of one of the triazoyl rings, which leads to the formation of C,N,O tridentate ligands L1 or L2.
