Vibrio alginolyticus has two types of flagella (polar and lateral) in one cell. We isolated mutants with only a polar flagellum (Pof+ Laf-) or only lateral flagella (Pof- Laf+). Using these mutants, we demonstrated that the energy sources of the lateral and polar flagellar motors in V. alginolyticus are H+ and Na+ motive forces, respectively, as in the related species V. parahaemolyticus.

We have previously shown that the alpha-tubulin of Chlamydomonas flagella is synthesized as a precursor which is modified by acetylation in the flagellum during flagellar assembly. In this report, we show the presence of an alpha-tubulin acetylase activity in isolated Chlamydomonas flagella that is highly specific for alpha-tubulin of both mammalian brain and Chlamydomonas.

At 22 degrees C a flagellin mutant of Listeria monocytogenes was found to attach to stainless steel at levels 10-fold lower than wild-type cells, even under conditions preventing active motility. At 37 degrees C, when flagella are not produced, attachment of both strains was identical. Therefore, flagella per se facilitate the early stage of attachment.
