A clinical trial was undertaken to compare the efficacy of neutral red photodynamic inactivation treatment of genital herpes infections with that of a non-photoactive dye, phenol red, as a control. In a series of nineteen patients with virologically proven herpes genitalis who were adequately followed, eleven were treated with neutral red, and eight with phenol red; no difference in response to...
Herpes simplex virus 2 caused a genital ulcer, and a secondary herpetic whitlow appeared during acyclovir therapy. The secondary and recurrent whitlow isolates were acyclovir-resistant and temperature-sensitive in contrast to a genital isolate. We identified the ribonucleotide reductase mutation responsible for temperature-sensitivity by deep-sequencing analysis.
In the absence of any other lesions on the body, the diagnosis of localized genital psoriasis can be difficult, requiring further examinations including a biopsy. We report a case of psoriatic pseudobalanitis circinata triggered by a herpes virus infection, and we discuss the Koebner phenomenon and the therapeutic management of psoriasis of the genital area.
Background: Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) is highly prevalent and major cause of genital herpes in humans. The life-long nature of infection and the increasing prevalence of genital herpes imply that vaccination is the best strategy for controlling the spread of infection and limiting HSV disease. HSV glycoprotein D (gD) is one of the most important viral immunogen which has an essential ...
A 38-year-old man with a history of recurrent genital ulceration initially diagnosed as genital herpes was admitted after presenting with paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. Echocardiography revealed aneurysm formation of the sinus of Valsalva. On diagnosis of an aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva associated with Behçet's disease (BD), surgeon repaired the affected sinus only, and continuous steroid t...
Genital Ulcer Diseases are defined as ulcerative, erosive, pustular or vesicular genital lesion(s), with or without regional lymphadenopathy, caused by a number of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and non–STI-related conditions (PHAC, 2013). The etiology of GUD varies globally and temporally. For most young, sexually active patients with GUD, etiology is related to an STI. The annual glob...
There have been several important advances in the range of available diagnostic tests for genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in recent years; polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is emerging in routine clinical use and the potential role of type specific serological tests is currently under debate. Several large trials of prophylactic vaccines, subsequently proved to be ineffective, have e...
The progress of 58 patients with first attacks of genital herpes was monitored for up to 30 weeks. The effects of sex (gender), age, social class, and non-psychotic psychiatric illness (as measured by the "general health questionnaire," GHQ) on the recurrence rate of herpes was studied. The recurrence rates, measured by the actuarial percentage recurrence-free curves, showed that the 29 patient...
Despite the downturn in the incidence of many sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), some--particularly genital herpes and genital warts--are epidemic, and syphilis is seeing a resurgence. This article covers how to recognize, diagnose, and manage common STDs and how their presentation and treatment differ in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
Background: This study designed to determine and compare the prevalence of HSV-2 infection between two groups of women with high and low risk behaviors in Tehran. Materials and Methods: 362 women attending OB & GY clinics as low risk group and 156 prisoner and DIC (drop in Center) resident women in Tehran as high risk group, were enrolled in this cross sectional study. HSV-2 antibodies were tes...
