An evaluation of the Vitek Anaerobe Identification (ANI) card was performed with 341 bacterial isolates, including 313 clinical isolates and 28 stock strains of anaerobic microorganisms. Identifications obtained with the ANI card were compared with those determined by conventional methods. The card identified 73.2% of 149 anaerobic gram-negative bacilli, 63.6% of 44 Clostridium spp., 65.8% of 3...

Studies were carried out evaluating the protective activity of immunization with common enterobacterial antigen (CA) against challenge with heterologous gram-negative bacilli. Active immunization of mice with Escherichia coli 0:14 elicited titers of antibody to CA of 1:640 or greater but completely failed to enhance resistance to challenge by mouse virulent strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae or E...

purpose : infectious corneal ulceration is a serious potential complication of prk. although gram positive organisms are the most common pathogens, in this study we present the first case of gram negative bacilli keratitis, alcaligenes, after prk. case report : a 22-year-old man was referred to our institution due to infection following corneal refractive surgery. three days after surgery, the ...

salmonella is a gram-negative, non-spore forming facultative anaerobic, motile bacilli. in developing countries, non-typhoidal salmonella (nts) accounts for the steadily increase in the proportion of human infections in recent decades. the clinical presentations of non-typhoidal salmonella infection are protean, including gastroenteritis (the most common one), bacteremia, septic arthritis, oste...

background: ampc type β-lactamases are commonly isolated from extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant gram-negative bacteria. also, resistance appeared in bacterial species not naturally producing ampc enzymes. therefore, a standard test for the detection of the plasmid-mediated ampc enzyme and new breakpoints for extended spectrum cephalosporins are urgently necessary. objectives: to detect ...

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a symbiotic product to decolonize the intestinal tract of patients harboring multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacilli and to prevent nosocomial infections. METHODS: This was a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, conducted in a tertiary-care university hospital. All adult hospitalized patients with a posi...

Lysis by KOH and hydrolysis of L-alanine-4-nitroanilide were compared with the Gram reaction of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria. Both tests correlated well with the Gram reaction with nonfermentative bacilli and Bacillus species, whereas they did not correlate with nonsporulating anaerobes. Only campylobacteria were KOH positive and L-alanine-4-nitroanilide and gram negative.

Colonization and infection by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacilli (MDR GNB) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are increasingly reported. We conducted a 5-year prospective cohort surveillance study in a tertiary NICU of the hospital "Paolo Giaccone," Palermo, Italy. Our objectives were to describe incidence and trends of MDR GNB colonization and the characteristics of the most preval...

INTRODUCTION An excessive risk for bacteremia has recently been reported in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) treated with intravenous treprostinil. We aimed to assess this association in a cohort of patients from a Spanish referral center. PATIENTS AND METHODS We performed a retrospective cohort study that included 55 patients diagnosed with PAH who received a continuous in...
