To predict the outcome of (almost) any experiment we have to assume that our spacetime is globally hyperbolic. The wormholes, if they exist, cast doubt on the validity of this assumption. At the same time, no evidence has been found so far (either observational, or theoretical) that the possibility of their existence can be safely neglected.

BACKGROUND Obesity and diabetes are highly prevalent among pregnant women in the United States. No study has examined the independent and combined effects of maternal prepregnancy obesity and maternal diabetes on the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in parallel with other developmental disorders (DDs). METHODS This study is based on 2734 children (including 102 ASD cases), a subset of t...

We show that an exact forecast of great radiation hazard in space, in the magnetosphere, in the atmosphere and on the ground can be made by using highenergy particles (few GeV/nucleon and higher) whose transportation from the Sun is characterized by a much bigger diffusion coefficient than for small and middle energy particles. Therefore, high energy particles come from the Sun much earlier (8–...

AIMS To determine whether circulating levels of chromogranin A (CgA) provide prognostic information independently of conventional risk markers in acute coronary syndromes (ACSs). METHODS AND RESULTS We measured circulating CgA levels on day 1 in 1268 patients (median age 67 years, 70% male) with ACS admitted to a single coronary care unit of a Scandinavian teaching hospital. The merit of CgA ...

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) combines the probabilities of all earthquake scenarios with different magnitudes and distances with predictions of resulting ground motion intensity, in order to compute seismic hazard at a site. PSHA also incorporates uncertainties in ground motion predictions, by considering multiple Ground Motion Prediction ("attenuation") Models (GMPMs). Current ...

Natural hazard research began as a study of cultural perceptions to extreme naturally occurring events. Since the advent of the study, natural hazard literature has become steeped in terminology that is sometimes confusing to the reader. The concepts of hazard, risk, and disaster are often confused with one another and with the extreme event itself. Although the extreme event is inherent in haz...

This paper discusses an experiment that measured the effectiveness of a hazard identification process used to support safety in Defence Standard 00-56 project. The experimental case study utilised a Ministry of Defence project that assessed simultaneously two potential suppliers who were competing for a MOD equipment contract. The UK MOD Corporate Research Programme funded the comparison work a...

The United States has no comprehensive national warning strategy that covers all hazards in all places. Instead, public warning practices are decentralized across different governments and the private sector. Uneven preparedness to issue warnings exists across local communities; hence, people are unevenly protected from the surprise onset of natural disasters. Without changes in this situation,...

Improving the Presage Polymer Radiosensitivity for Hot Cell and Glovebox 3D Characterization Adamovics, John; Farfan, Eduardo B.; Coleman, J. Rusty Health Physics (2013), 104(1), 63-67. RadBall is a novel, passive, radiation detection device that provides 3D mapping of radiation from areas where measurements have not been possible previously due to lack of access or extremely high radiation dos...
