By multiple criteria, inosiplex-a reputed stimulator of virus-sensitized lymphocytes-had no demonstrable therapeutic effects in a preliminary controlled study of patients with localized herpes zoster and cancer. Lymphocytes from the six drug-treated patients were no more responsive to varicella-zoster antigen and phytohemagglutinin than were lymphocytes from seven patients who received a placebo.
Varicella-zoster virus reactivation causes zoster (shingles), a syndrome characterized by severe pain and a vesicular rash. The present report details a case of varicella-zoster virus reactivation of the maxillary and mandibular division of the right trigeminal nerve without evidence of vesicular rash (zoster sine herpete). It is difficult to identify owing to no typical clinical signs such as ...
Sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam(R); GlaxoSmithKline) is a pentavalent antimonial compound used in the treatment of leishmaniasis, which has an association with reactivation of varicella zoster virus (VZV). We report the first known case of an immunocompetent adult who developed VZV aseptic meningitis and dermatomal herpes zoster during treatment with sodium stibogluconate.
BACKGROUND Patients who develop herpes zoster or herpes zoster ophthalmicus may be at risk for cerebrovascular and cardiac complications. We systematically reviewed the published literature to determine the association between herpes zoster and its subtypes with the occurrence of cerebrovascular and cardiac events. METHODS/RESULTS Systematic searches of PubMed (MEDLINE), SCOPUS (Embase) and G...
Varicella zoster virus DNA in mononuclear cells was studied by the polymerase chain reaction to obtain virological evidence of reactivation in the children who had contracted chickenpox in infancy. The results appear to explain why chickenpox in infancy is a risk factor for herpes zoster in immunocompetent children.
Background: Varicella–zoster virus (VZV) causes herpes zoster and varicella (Chicken-pox), usually a mild disease which is diagnosed clinically with few complications. However, in neonates and healthy adults it can have a severe presentation. Herpes zoster results from VZV reactivation later in life. Objective: To determine the seroprevalence of VZV in elementary school children aged 6-10 years...
This report proves the relationship between herpes zoster ophthalmicus and seropositivity for HTLV-III in young and often apparently healthy African patients. The ophthalmologist should screen patients with herpes zoster ophthalmicus for antibodies against HTLV-III in areas where this virus is endemic or if the patient belongs to a known risk group. If the test is positive, the patient should b...
BACKGROUND The objectives of this study were to characterize the burden of herpes zoster, as well as the longitudinal and incremental changes of healthcare service utilization among individuals with herpes zoster and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) compared to those without. METHODS Using the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD), we established a herpes zoster cohort of people dia...
Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus that has lain dormant in the dorsal root ganglion after primary infection (as chickenpox). It affects the sensory ganglia and their areas of innervation, and is characterised by pain in the distribution of the affected nerve, and crops of clustered vesicles over the area. Pain may occur days before rash onset, or n...
varicella zoster virus (vzv) is a member of herpes family viruses, which causes varicella (chickenpox) after primary infection and herpes zoster (shingles) because of latent virus reactivation from dorsal root ganglia. generally, prevalence of varicella antibodies increases with age. we aimed to compare the prevalence of anti-vzv antibody in children under seven years old, in order to obtain a ...
