Collaborative Software Engineering (CSE) supports the fine-grained real-time development of software by teams of developers located anywhere on the Internet. In this paper we describe Caise, our CSE environment, and explore the ways in which such environments can benefit developers. We consider the rôles of heuristic evaluation, log analysis and visualisation in quantifying the benefits of CSE.

Many polynomial complete problems can be reduced efficiently to three matroids intersection problems. Subgradient methods are shown to yield very good algorithms for computing tight lower bounds to the solution of these problems. The bounds may be used either to construct heuristically guided (branch-and-bound) methods for solving the problems, or to obtain an upper bound to the difference betw...

This paper examines how to increase the productivity of the software usability evaluation technique called heuristic evaluation (HE) through the use of collaborative software. Building off of a brainstorming research, it is theorized that part of HE resembles brainstorming, in that it is a creative process that can benefit from anonymous, parallel production afforded by collaborative software. ...

The aggregation of usability problems is an integral part of a usability evaluation. Numerous problems can be revealed and given that there are usually limited resources for fixing or redesigning the system then prioritisation of the problem set is essential. This paper examines the prioritisation of usability problems from a single heuristic evaluation and multiple heuristic evaluations of Que...

The usability evaluation of advanced interfaces such as intelligent, adaptive and context-aware interfaces presents several challenges. These interfaces need to be evaluated over an extended time period and used in their actual context of use, rather than in a laboratory setting. Usability evaluation methods for traditional interactive systems have been extensively researched and are well under...

Evaluation in Information Visualization is inherently complex, and it is still a challenge. Whereas it is possible to adapt evaluation methods from other fields, as Human-Computer Interaction, this adaptation may not be straightforward since visualization applications are very specific interactive systems. This paper addresses issues in using heuristic evaluation to evaluate visualizations and ...

This paper presents a heuristic evaluation method for online documentation to identify specific usability problems, which are observed with such documentation. We have used qualitative indicators for all heuristics, which are summed up to provide a usability index (with base 100). This index quantifies the goodness of online documentation under consideration. We have considered both types of on...

Investment on usability pays off better than any other business action but it is well known that the usability engineering is not that much applied in practice. One reason is the high cost of evaluation studies. To have a better justification of the costs of each usability evaluation we need to estimate costs of running a controlled evaluation in organization as well as the benefits of successf...

In this paper we discuss and experiment with Lazy A∗, a variant of A∗ where heuristics are evaluated lazily and with rational lazy A∗, which decides whether to compute the more expensive heuristics at all, based on a myopic value of information estimate. Full version appears in IJCAI-2013 (Tolpin et al. 2013)

This paper gives an overview of my PhD research that aims at contributing toward the definition of a class of interfaces for music creation that target non-musicians. In particular, I am focusing on the differences on design and evaluation procedures with respect to traditional interfaces for music creation that are usually intended to be used by musicians. Supported by a number of preliminary ...
