The excited-state dynamics of 4-thiothymidine in the ionic liquid, 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide, is revealed. Branching of the initial excited-state population results in efficient intersystem crossing to the triplet manifold with a rate constant of 1.6 x 10(12) s(-1) and close to unity triplet yield after UVA excitation at 340 or 360 nm.

1,8-Naphthoylene(trifluoromethylbenzimidazole)-4,5-dicarboxylic acid imide (NTFBII) derivatives were synthesized. The OFET devices based on these new materials showed typical n-type OFET behavior and achieved an electron mobility as high as 0.10 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) with good bias stress stability.

In the presence of trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) or bis(trifluoromethane-sulfonyl)imide (Tf₂NH), iodosobenzene (PhI=O) efficiently promoted the reactions of dicarbonyl compounds as well as monocarbonyl compounds with nitriles to give 2,4-disubstituted and 2,4,5-trisubstituted oxazole in a single step under the mild conditions.

Electron-deficient pyrene-1,2,6,7-tetracarboxylic diimide () and its cyano derivative () have been designed and synthesized as a new family of aromatic diimides. PyrDI has two unexpected five-membered imide rings and can form excimers facilely in the solid state. These new pyrene derivatives are promising n-type semiconductors for organic electronics.

Pyrene-based molecular tweezers show sequence-specific binding to aromatic polyimides through sterically-controlled donor-acceptor pi-stacking and hydrogen bonding; (1)H NMR spectra of tweezer-complexes with polyimides having different sequence-restrictions show conclusively that the detection of long range sequence-information results from multiple tweezer-binding at adjacent imide residues.

Stable high-concentration suspensions (up to 0.95 mg mL(-1)) of non-oxidized few layer graphene (FLG), five or less sheets, with micrometre-long edges were obtained via direct exfoliation of natural graphite flakes in ionic liquids, such as 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoro-methane-sulfonyl)imide ([Bmim]-[Tf(2)N]), by tip ultrasonication.
