mineral dust is produced from both natural and anthropogenic sources. dust aerosols can be transported over long distances in the atmosphere. they reduce the incident shortwave radiation to the surface by absorbing and scattering the solar radiation; thereby leading to a cooling effect at the surface and lower tropospheric temperature. on the other hand, by absorption and re-emission of longwav...

Radiation characteristics of fused quartz containing bubbles (10 % porosity) are determined using inverse method based on theoretical and experimental bi-directional transmittances and reflectances. The Discrete Ordinates Method is used to solve the RTE. The internal and external interfaces are assumed to be optically smooth. The importance of the choice of the interpolation law has been shown,...

To determine quantities for radiation protection against high-energy electrons, such as those from LINAC, the organ dose equivalents and equivalent doses for the human body were calculated using EGS-4 Monte Carlo simulation code and an MIRD-5 mathematical human phantom. Conversion factors for the incident fluence to the organ dose equivalent, to the effective dose and to the effective dose equi...

Based on composite optical transformation, we propose a rotatable illusion media with positive permittivity and permeability to manipulate terahertz waves, and a new way to realize singular parameter-independent cloaks when the incident wave with a certain width propagates from specific incident directions. The fundamental mechanism of this kind of cloak is that the illusion media can be able t...

Linearly polarized microwave radiation is shown to have its plane of polarization converted to the orthogonal state upon reflection from an ultrathin (λ/25) cavity array. The structure benefits from an uncomplicated design consisting of a metallic grating closely separated from a ground plane by a dielectric spacer. A single set of periodically spaced slits (monograting) exhibits polarization c...

We study the forces generated by an electromagnetic field on two coupled gold nanowires at the vicinity of the plasmon resonance wavelength. Two different regimes are observed, depending on the separation distance between the wires. In the near field coupling regime, both attractive and repulsive forces can be generated, depending on and the illumination wavelength. Furthermore, at the plasmon ...

Coherent terahertz (THz) emission from the vacuum-plasma interface induced through laser wake-field excitation has been investigated by particle-in-cell simulations. The emission frequency appears around tau(-1)(L), where tau(L) is the laser pulse duration, even though the plasma density is distributed inhomogeneously near the interface. The emission amplitude, which is zero on the propagation ...

The desorption yields of excited hydrogen atoms from the surfaces of KCl, KBr, NaCl, NaF, and LiF have been measured as a function of incident photon and electron energy and flux, time of irradiation, dosing pressure of H2 and sample temperature. As these surfaces are exposed to H2 gas during electron or photon bombardment, the fluorescence from excited hydrogen atoms ejected from the surface i...

The long term perturbation of a Newtonian binary system by an incident gravitational wave is discussed in connection with the issue of gravitational ionization. The periodic orbits of the planar tidal equation are investigated and the conditions for their existence are presented. The possibility of ionization of a Keplerian orbit via gravitational radiation is discussed.

An expression for the fraction of incident radiation transmitted by a right angle bend in a rectangular light pipe is derived. This expression is used to show that, in a planar light pipe structure with right angle bends, light attenuation is due only to reflection losses at the walls if the launching angle is 45 degrees .
