Maintaining quinolone concentrations outside the mutant selection window (MSW) between the MIC and mutant prevention concentration (MPC) was suggested by in vitro and in vivo studies to prevent the selection of resistant mutants. However, selection also may depend on the presence of resistant bacterial mutants at the start of treatment, which is highly dependent on the initial inoculum size. In...

We appreciate the attention given to our publication regarding the mechanism associated with the immunopathogenic response in experimental vulvovaginal candidiasis that employed mice resistant (CD-1) and susceptible (C3H/HeN) to chronic colonization/infection (6). We respect data presented by Gabrielli et al. (1) regarding the achievement of a chronic colonization condition in the CD-1 strain o...

In view of the increase in Saccharomyces cerevisiae mannan content, the culture condition for S.cerevisiae were optimized in this study. The influence of culture condition such as original pH, inoculum size, and temperature on mannan production were evaluated using Response surface methodology. The mathematical model was established by the quadratic rotary combination design. with the order of ...

Complex organic substrates represent an important and relevant feedstock for producing hydrogen by Dark Fermentation (DF). Usually, external microbial inoculum originated from various natural environments is added to seed the DF reactors. However, H2 yields are significantly impacted origin storage conditions as community composition can fluctuate. This study aims determine how type time of imp...

Simulated candidemia was produced with 20 Candida isolates at three inoculum sizes (100, 10, and 1 CFU/ml of blood). Growth detection was better with larger inocula. The time to growth detection was shorter with larger inocula. Inoculum size does effect Candida growth detection and time to detection in BACTEC 9240 automated systems.

Despite overwhelming interest in the impact exerted by recombination during evolution of RNA viruses, the relative contribution of the polarity of inoculum templates remains poorly understood. Here, by agroinfiltrating Nicotiana benthamiana leaves, we show that brome mosaic virus (BMV) replicase is competent to initiate positive-strand [(+)-strand] synthesis on an ectopically expressed RNA3 neg...

In Australia the spread of the Ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 microvariant (OsHV-1 μVar) threatens the Pacific oyster industry. There was an urgent need to develop an experimental infection model in order to study the pathogenesis of the virus in controlled laboratory conditions. The present study constitutes the first attempt to use archived frozen oysters as a source of inoculum, based on the Aus...

BACKGROUND The stability of the accuracy of a diagnostic test is critical to whether clinicians can rely on its result. We aimed to assess whether the performance of a rapid antigen detection test (RADT) for group A streptococcus (GAS) is affected by the clinical spectrum and/or bacterial inoculum size. METHODS Throat swabs were collected from 785 children with pharyngitis in an office-based,...

Cut or intact surfaces of fresh strawberries were spot inoculated with a five-strain cocktail of nalidixic-acid resistant Listeria monocytogenes (10(6) (low inoculum) and 10(8) (high inoculum) CFU per three-berry sample). Inoculated strawberries were dried for 1 h at 24 degrees C and were stored in loosely closed containers at 4 or 24 degrees C. An initial population reduction of approximately ...
