The rapid evolution of insecticide resistance remains one of the biggest challenges in the control of medically and economically important pests. Insects have evolved a diverse range of mechanisms to reduce the efficacy of the commonly used classes of insecticides, and finding the genetic basis of resistance is a major aid to management. In a previously unstudied population, we performed an F2 ...

Onion thrips, Thrips tabaci Lindeman (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is a highly destructive pest of onion, Allium cepa L., and its management relies on multiple applications of foliar insecticides. Development of insecticide resistance is common in T. tabaci populations, and new strategies are needed to relax existing levels of insecticide use, but still provide protection against T. tabaci without...

In the past decade, there has been rapid scale-up of insecticide-based malaria vector con‐ trol in the context of integrated vector management (IVM). But, the continued efficacy of vector control interventions is threatened by the selection of insecticide resistance. Evi‐ dence of insecticide resistance operationally undermining malaria vector control pro‐ grammes is invariably mounting and is ...

Insecticide sprays and dusts are used for controlling bed bugs, Cimex lectularius L. In natural environments, bed bugs have daily access to hosts after they are exposed to insecticides. The established laboratory insecticide bioassay protocols do not provide feeding after insecticide treatments, which can result in inflated mortality compared with what would be encountered in the field. We eval...

Soybean aphid, Aphis glycinesMatsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is one of the most damaging pests of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merrill, in the midwestern United States and Canada. We compared three soybean aphid management techniques in three midwestern states (Iowa, Michigan, and Minnesota) for a 3-yr period (2005Ð2007). Management techniques included an untreated control, an insecticidal seed ...

Three pyrethroids were evaluated in the laboratory against Aedes albopictus females by exposure to insecticide impregnated papers, and to 4th instar Ae. albopictus larvae as insecticide solutions. Lambda-cyhalothrin was found to be the most effective pyrethroid when tested against Aedes albopictus adult females and larvae compared with that of deltamethrin and permethrin.

The visceral form is the most deadly form of the leishmaniasis family, which affects poor and developing countries. The Indian state of Bihar has the highest prevalence and mortality rate due to visceral leishmaniasis in the world, where it is also referred to as Kala-Azar. Insecticide spraying is the current vector control procedure for controlling its spread in Bihar. This study proposes a no...

While the area of organic crop production increases at a global scale, the potential interactions between pest management in organic and conventionally managed systems have so far received little attention. Here, we evaluate the landscape-level codependence of insecticide-based and natural enemy-based pest management using a simulation model for parasitoid-host interactions in landscapes consis...

Neonicotinoid insecticides are a major group and the newest group among insecticides. They permeate the entire body of a plant and show excellent effects for the control of diseases and harmful insects. The history of neonicotinoid insecticides from development to their market release dates back to the late 1800s. Nicotine (Fig. 1), an alkaloid in tobacco leaves, is an early neonicotinoid insec...

BACKGROUND The diamondback moth Plutella xyllostella has developed a high level of resistance to the latest insecticide chlorantraniliprole. A better understanding of P. xylostella's resistance mechanism to chlorantraniliprole is needed to develop effective approaches for insecticide resistance management. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To provide a comprehensive insight into the resistance mechanisms of...
