in this paper, the effects of input temperature and compression ratio on the net output work and efficiency of the air standard cycles, i.e. atkinson cycle, diesel cycle and otto cycle are analyzed. we assumed that the compression and power processes are adiabatic and reversible and any convective, conductive and radiative heat transfer to cylinder wall during the heat rejection process may be ...
SYNOPSIS Internal combustion engines are being required to comply with increasingly stringent government exhaust emissions regulations. Compression ignition piston engines will continue to be used in cost-sensitive fuel applications such as in heavy-duty buses and trucks, power generation, locomotives, and off-highway applications, and will find application in hybrid electric vehicles. Close co...
The design of modern internal combustion (IC) engines requires the understanding and quantification of many physical phenomena, including their impact on engine performance and emissions. In fact, the investigation of thermo-fluid-dynamic processes, combustion, performance and emissions is essential to fulfil the emission regulations, that are becoming more and more severe. Although the experim...
In this paper fuel-optimal rendezvous maneuvers for passenger cars will be analyzed. The results are obtained using simplified yet realistic descriptions of the vehicles and their internal combustion engines. Both the mathematical arguments leading to and the physical interpretations deriving from the optimal solution are shown. Implementation issues (computational burden, convergence, feedforw...
In this paper, we outline the future of modelling in reaction engineering. Specifically, we use the example of particulate emission formation in internal combustion engines to demonstrate what modelling can achieve at present, and to illustrate the ultimately inevitable steps that need to be taken in order to create a new generation of engineering models.
The purpose of this paper is to studying nonlinear k-ε turbulence models and its advantages in internal combustion engines, since the standard k-ε model is incapable of representing the anisotropy of turbulence intensities and fails to express the Reynolds stresses adequately in rotating flows. Therefore, this model is not only incapable of expressing the anisotropy of turbulence in an engine c...
We compare the energy efficiency of hybrid and fuel cell vehicles as well as conventional internal combustion engines. Our analysis indicates that fuel cell vehicles using hydrogen from fossil fuels offer no significant energy efficiency advantage over hybrid vehicles operating in an urban drive cycle. We conclude that priority should be placed on hybrid vehicles by industry and government.
