The main combinatorial result in this article is a classification of bar partitions of n which are of maximal p-bar weight for all odd primes p ≤ n. As a consequence, we show that apart from very few exceptions any irreducible spin character of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups vanishes on some element of odd prime order.

We exhibit for each integer n ≥ 15 an ordinary irreducible character of the symmetric group Sn, which restricts irreducibly to An, with the property that its degree is divisible by every prime less than or equal to n, thereby proving a conjecture of D. L. Alvis.

We study the action of the symplectic group on pairs of a vector and a flag. Considering the irreducible components of the conormal variety, we obtain an exotic analogue of the Robinson–Schensted correspondence. Conjecturally, the resulting cells are related to exotic character sheaves.
